Gold coin in Guinness Book of Records stolen

I imagine the only way for the thieves to sell it is by melting it down, it's too recognizable.

You beat me to it... was just about to post this.... at 221 pounds it is worth $4.5 million.... Amazing heist... and so simply done. Cheers, RickO
I imagine they figured this out before the heist, and that they'll also cut it with some alloy so that it's no longer .99999. Perhaps it will be cast into miniature Eiffel Tower figurines and accidentally sold to tourists.

As a (new to the hobby) gold miner, wow 221 pounds sure is a lot of LABOR!!!!!!!
Tru-- got it for a door stop:).
Some collectors will go to any lengths to complete their sets.

I can just see the future headline when the thieves see the error of their ways and return the coin:
"THIEVES TURN OVER A NEW LEAF!"
I'd like to see the thief's flip that one

Just be sure to call it in the air.

I could see the thieves melting this down for its gold content. Fencing it would be too hard given its fame, unless there is a collector who wants it and is willing to keep quiet about it.
The smart thing to do would have been to take the real one and replace it with a replica made of gold-foil covered chocolate. Nobody would have noticed until the next time it was to be moved!

I was home... I swear!...btw anyone have use for some slightly damaged 2 oz-10oz .999 gold chips?
This severely dampens my enthusiasm for buying and displaying one of these. I've cancelled my order.
that is because this was the bottom-bagger business strike version.
the first strike satin proof version comes in at 1/2 ton.
the bigger/heavier it is, the safer right?
