Gold coin in Guinness Book of Records stolen

I imagine the only way for the thieves to sell it is by melting it down, it's too recognizable.

    I imagine they figured this out before the heist, and that they'll also cut it with some alloy so that it's no longer .99999. Perhaps it will be cast into miniature Eiffel Tower figurines and accidentally sold to tourists.

    I could see the thieves melting this down for its gold content. Fencing it would be too hard given its fame, unless there is a collector who wants it and is willing to keep quiet about it.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    The smart thing to do would have been to take the real one and replace it with a replica made of gold-foil covered chocolate. Nobody would have noticed until the next time it was to be moved!

    that is because this was the bottom-bagger business strike version.

    the first strike satin proof version comes in at 1/2 ton.
