I mentioned in another thread I bought a 42-s at the recent Long Beach Show. At the time it completed my toned short set which was 11 years in the making and which I was told it couldn't be done ; )
The 42-s was indeed the most elusive to find with any attractive toning to speak of. I cracked the coin at the show ( PCGS 65 ) and submitted it raw. It did come back a 66 which I was fairly certain it would.

You da man MJ. Since already in PCGS plastic, why not just have them regrade it? Either way they see it raw again. Only on the regrade you are sure they cannot grade it 64, question the toning, etc. Interested in your reasoning.

I've used the regular service before but call me old fashioned or just plain stubborn on this one.I've always tried to buy coins that if cracked 100 times they would come back in the same grade or better 100 times. Maybe I was just subliminally challenging myself and nothing more. I didn't see a downside and didn't really thing twice about it. I bought it from Shamhart and we both thought strongly it was a 66. It's my series and their all his series : ). I kind of bought it as a 66 with some wiggle room for me taking the chance.
FWIW I was the under bidder on this coin @ 3x price guide.

I thought the coin I bought was superior in every way. Just needed it in the right holder for it all to play out as I intended. Ended up with the better coin and paid a little less. I also lost out on 66 +about year ago in a Legend auction that hammed at 8 times guide or about 5k. It was a nice coin. Like mine better.

I do think it is beautiful. I don't think it is a hammered strike though. The strike is rather typical. Still, for a coin this pretty, and to buy it in a 65 holder, you did very, very well. Congrats!

My Washington Quarter Registry set...in progress
I took a look at the large TrueView. The right field looks pristine. Negligible bit of noise on a ray. Skirt lines end at the knee for the center band. Liberty's hip looks mark free. Liberty's head also mark free.
The reverse is wonderful. The eagle's left leg is mark free. Negligible bit of noise well hidden in eagle's feathers.
It is a 42-S in the strike dept. However, Liberty's head is mark free, and you have mark free hip and eagle's left leg areas.
To me, basically, the colors are transcendent. Full color in Liberty's field of vision. Personally I like a little red highlighting the date, as in your example. I say the same for light lavender color effects also. I would overlook a small toning splotch on an example of this quality, but yours has none! Pardon my language, but Holy Shit!
A half dollar that would be wonderful to see in hand.

My short set is bright white but I can sure see the attraction in that one. Congrats on completing your set. When I completed my set of 1936-42 proofs, it felt good but also kind of left a void after so many years of pursuit. Good luck finding another obsession.
The wide open fields on that coin look amazing clean. Not bad toning and eye appeal, either! Well done!

Congrats Mark! That is a smooth '42-S. There's maybe just a tick or two in the right field but miniscule. Devices are clean and the reverse is great. It has the most color that I've ever seen for the issue. Quite honestly, even more colorful than what I expected. Strike is typical. Great MS 66 Walker and deserving of the grade. Nice job!

Very pretty coin Mark! Especially for a 42-S! I agree that it is better to send these in raw. The graders will just "grade the coins" and have no preconceived notion of what grade they were. I know I've made mistakes on my grades where I've had to fight to get a coin back in the original grade, but if you feel confident in your grading abilities (and you certainly know how to grade Walkers), and you grade the coin the NEXT grade up, you should feel confident enough to crack it and send it raw.

Congratulations and I love the coin. Further congratulations on completing a toned set. People who don't collect pretty toning don't realize how hard it is to get a full toned set done. Every date comes toned, but nicely toned is a far different challenge.

Preach brother! There are not enough proponents for cracking and resubmitting. It's a coward's play otherwise.
What is wrong with a regrade? The coin is graded raw (and blindly by the graders), but the guarantee is there to protect in the event of a downgrade. I don't think there was any real risk with this piece, but as a general matter, I think a regrade is preferable.
