I know if that was my coin and I sent it in to get slabbed I would have never got a straight grade

The neck has a bigger scratch then the ones on the nose and cheek.

Nice tough date in a good grade. Not impossible or rare, but tough.

Here's the thing to really think about. Hold that coin where you can see it with the naked eye, or even you rx glasses and ask if it's a distraction.
That mark on the neck is barely visible. And it's in a less conspicuous place than the facial features or right field.

Stare at a blown up image on a monitor, or under a 5x loupe and sure it's a cut mark, but I still don't see it keeping it out of a straight grade holder. It's circulation, coin had a life.
No environmental issues or obvious cleaning, so I believe 45 is a good call.

It's hard to find a perfect 45 Barber Quarter or Half.
However, an 1896o comes around fairly often so if you don't like it, pass.

    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

Just checked the CAC database and it doesn't have a bean.

With the scratch like area on the neck its not something I would spend $700 on, I would have taken a nice VG in the $100 range to fill the hole and spent the difference on a nice Gold Coin - AGE, Mod Commem, World Gold, etc.

Did you get it way below bid or something? Is that a raised area or scratch on the neck? It sure stands out. Why all this about a bean -Getting a bean on it would not be even relevant, waste of money especially if people don't like the coin. Sorry it does not meet my standards.

Yes its a mistake - who ya going to sell it to especially at big ticket money? Walk it around the bourse at a show and solicit offers - if somebody offers say around at least 80% of CDN Bid, take the money and run. I have to wonder what it looks like under a glass and 100 watt lighting. Was this sight unseen purchase? I don't believe I could sell it anywhere near that.

It doesn't make a hoot to me how often or not an issue comes around If I can't sell it / make money on it.

I recently sold off most of my XF/AU Barber Half collection.
My 1896-O in PCGS 40 sold for $1,600 plus the juice.

You won't loose money on the one in 45 you bought. The neck scratch is ancient - and the misc. ticks on the
OBV are a distraction - but - I think you'll be fine financially.

Don't confuse a dealer's mentality to flip at zero risk with what you're trying to do in finding decent specimens, fairly priced. If every collector waited for a zero risk, no downside, problem free coin, there wouldn't be much of a hobby left. I don't know if MFH noticed that the OP has a 96-0 25c rather than the 50c. I'm taking a leap here, but I would think the better date 0/S mint Barber halves have a much stronger following than the quarters....size matters.

I would pass. I am a little picky and I would always see that scratch as well as the rim ding.

No picture of the reverse... could well be net graded 45.... If the OP is questioning the scratch in the neck, yep, it is prominent, and if it bothers you, don't buy it......it will only get worse with each viewing. Cheers, RickO

The scratch would always bother me. Pass.

The neck scratch grabs my eye immediately and I am just surprised to see it in a non problem holder. I was looking to see if others thought it was "market acceptable" or whatever the terms is... MFH your opinion is always relevant even you are switching denominations on us.... :) You are a Barber guru IMHO.

Thanks for the opines all... it is appreciated

    I think it's a 50/53 coin that has been netted to 45.

Despite the small scratch, the coin deserved a grade imo. And XF45 seems reasonable. Buyer and seller can negotiate on price from there. Does it pass the "problem-free" test? Of course not. Probably only a fraction of the existing coins in slabs are problem free. Nearly all of them have "problems" for the assigned grade. If you have a perfect/problem free PCGS/NGC XF45 barber quarter, please post it here. And a "thick skin" would be advised if you decide to post one. ;)

Are you sure that is a scratch on the coin and not the slab?

Not for me. A better date coin indeed but several attractive XF/AU examples have come to market in the past year or so. Id have to wait for a better specimen to surface....shouldn't require that much patience compared with some of the other dates in the series.

Always looking for tougher PSA 10's of Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, and Mike Trout.

    net graded

Rough surfaces, rim dings, cleaned, and over graded. Not a good combination.
