Hi! Thanks for this awesome giveaway! Congrats on (almost) 1000 posts! I would say my interesting tidbit is that I am reading through the "Highlights of the Stack Family Library Part 1), and Colonel Green's inventory started at $30,000!

Something interesting...last month I fell on the ice and broke my arm...had surgery for a radial head replacement and am now almost back to 100%.

Last week my 18 year old son got fouled on a lay-up in his basketball game and fell down, broke his arm, and had surgery earlier this week.

    Seemed interesting to me anyway.

I wanted to know how much a mercury dime should weigh so I got out my son's red book and actually started to read the beginning of the book and forgot how much cool information is in there.

    @ModCrewman - That's a tough month.

Something interesting? Keeping it numismatically related, I find it interesting that the price of gold has stayed fairly close to $1200 an ounce since a very short lived spike immediately after the Presidential election.

I went to the store yesterday on my way home after visiting the bank. I asked for a 1/2 dollar roll to search for some silver. After opening the roll and finding none, I decided to spend them. When I went to pay at the store, the sales clerk became visibly upset and had no idea what they were. They thought I was trying to scam them. The interesting part of this story is the sales clerk was probably in their late 50's to early 60's. I would think someone from that generation would remember half dollars when they circulated. I love paying with "odd" coins :p

OK, thank you for the chance.
I doubt it will interest many, but I just searched 4 rolls of "pennies" and found an XF 1960 Small Date.
Not very valuable, but an unusual circulation find to say the least. It has been a long time since I found one of those.

As the sun breaks, above the ground,
An old man stands on the hill.
As the ground warms, to the first rays of light
    A birdsong shatters the still.

    His eyes are ablaze,
See the madman in his gaze.

Fly on your way, like an eagle,
Fly as high as the sun,
On your way, like an eagle,
    Fly and touch the sun.

Now the crowd breaks and a young boy appears
Looks the old man in the eye
As he spreads his wings and shouts at the crowd
In the name of God my father I fly.

    His eyes seem so glazed
As he flies on the wings of a dream.
Now he knows his father betrayed
Now his wings turn to ashes to ashes his grave

Fly, on your way, like an eagle,
Fly as high as the sun,
On your way, like an eagle,
Fly as high as the sun.
On your way, like an eagle,
    Fly, touch the sun
On your way, like an eagle,
    Fly

Fly as high as the sun.

Yesterday, my Dad mentioned in conversation he made $3.90 per hour in 1969 at Piper Aircraft when he lived in Florida. He was 26 at the time. We looked up on the inflation calculator what $3.90 was in 1969, and it's equivalent to $25.93 today!

The largest value U.S. bill ever issued is the $100,000 1934 series gold certificate with a portrait of Woodrow Wilson. As far as I can tell, the largest value circulating U.S. coin is the $20 gold piece and the largest bullion is the $100 Platinum Eagle.

The largest coin ever minted by the US Mint was a gold "Half Union" pattern in 1877, weighing 83.45 grams, and 51.1 mm in diameter. The largest coin actually issued by the mint was the Panama-Pacific Exposition $50 gold commemorative, at 83.572 grams and 44 mm. An octagonal version of the coin was slightly larger, measuring 45 mm at its widest point.

  • I have children that are now collecting coins and actually look forward to it.
Getting our future generations interested in coins is fun and interesting

Does it have anything to do with "particularly nasty weather?"

Can you image if birds were tickled by feathers? You would see a flock of geese flying by laughing hysterically.
