I rarely buy US coinage and never seen a capped bust 1/2 dime until i obtained this one. Any guesses on the grade/value.

I would guess about AU.

Sorry, but it looks cleaned to me. I'd say it will come back XF Details.

Depends on luster and surfaces, from a wear perspective I would give it a AU50.

I think that the coin has AU details, but the surfaces look dull and lifeless in the photo. That is an indicator of an improper cleaning. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

The surfaces should look more the skin that this piece has. This is a Mint State example.

XF details, if what looks like a cleaning isn't too bad, it gets graded 35.

I'm thinking it's just a bad photo. Taking that into consideration I'd say AU53.

Just clarify, I submitted this 1796 half dime, which had a similar look, to NGC for grading and they refused grade it because it was "cleaned." I tried to appeal that decision and got nowhere. The grading services sometimes go easy on early coins, but not in this case. I thought that this coin should have gotten a grade somewhere between VF-30 and EF-40.

Looks like a scan, so who knows how those surfaces will look.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

I've seen coins look like that after removing a heavy long time coating of PVC with acetone.

@BillJones ....That Half Dime certainly does not look 'cleaned' in the pictures... nice old coin. Cheers, RickO

Bill's coin looks ok to me, too... Maybe slight hairlines we can't see in the picture?

I agree, probably on the line but the graders have much better eyes than I do. There might be a remedy with a Wayte Raymond holder maybe put it out on a sunny windowsill for a summer--originality.

I would send that 1796 in again. Many times I have cracked a coin PCGS called cleaned and it straight graded the next time!

Too late. I took my $1,000 loss and sent it out to pasture.

So have you been watching for it to see if it made into a straight graded holder? Wouldn't surprise me one bit from the pictures!

If you change pictures, I'll change my grade.

TPGs used to "bag" them when they looked like this; now it's a roll of the dice.
I wouldn't like the coin in a straight graded holder, sorry.
    AU details to me.
