I'm no longer a Coin COLLECTOR - I'm now a Coin INVESTOR ----- GTG Posted and better pics

Guesses and comments are still welcome, but scroll down for the actual grade.

My personal rule with my finances is I would never spend more than $10,000 on a coin, since it's a hobby for me.
To me, anything over that has to be an investment (other than a car).

But I broke the rule when I bought this. If I'm a coin investor I'm pretty bad at it since I'll be buried in this coin.

So I guess I’m still a collector because there were reasons I bought this coin:
1) I liked it
2) I wanted it
3) The 18th century date
4) It will go in my Type Set
5) I don't collect varieties, but this BD-8 only has 45-55 pieces so I wanted that rarity.

From the listing:

Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b, terminal reverse.

The heaviest die cracks run through AMERICA, identifying this rare variety. BD-8 has a surviving population of only 45 to 55 pieces in all grades, making it one of the scarcer Small Stars die parings.

Typically, BD-7 is the variety acquired by type collectors, but this BD-8 coin certainly has the quality and eye appeal to be considered for a type set with the added bonus of absolute rarity.

The strike is sharp and evenly executed. Some luster remains in the protected regions of the fields, while leaving the bulk of each side with rich orange-gold patina.

Eye appeal is excellent.

Guess the Grade And any comments you have.

Collector or Investor (who knows?) but I'm definitely not a Coin Photographer. I took pictures, enjoyed looking at it and then off to the SDB it went.

55/58...and I'm going to guess you far exceeded your $10k "limit". Heck of a type that I hope to one day own...congrats!

Looks like the scratches are on the plastic. I'll go AU58, and say WOW... what a coin. I love the orangey toning.

I will almost certainly never own a coin of this caliber (or price, anyway).

But thanks for the opportunity to vicariously admire it.

Great coin, on my daydream list. I'll guess 55, hard to judge luster from photos. appears to have nice color

Congrats. They're not making those anymore.

    I also like the strike.

    AU53?

I'd say AU-55. It is similar to my piece which is also an 1799.

    Great coin! Congratulations.

I'd say 55 as well. A little too much rub in the hair for 58 to me.

Wow, congratulations, very nice coin! As others have mentioned, an example of this series is a dream for most US type set collectors, myself included. Someday!

Hopefully, those scratches on the holder will polish off, or you can always get a new holder at some point. Very little wear, normal marks, I'll say AU55 too.

I owned a generic 1799 small star obverse in MS. One of the great American coins from the year Washington died.

From the 1st set of images I thought it may have a light cleaning. The second set even more so.

Coin is still a knock-out and I would be proud to own it.

Sweet coin. The fact you turned your investment grade coin into your avatar confirms you are still a collector at heart.

    58 would be my guess.

I owned same date and miss it now.

Financially, I should be more tolerant as I swapped it for ....silver (ugh) ...at $7 so overall my "investment" is probably better off.

    But not my emotional ..investment...

I sure wish I had imaged it. It was a reddish toned P/L MS61.

    Hindsight is great.

    BUT.... to the OP...yes.

ANYONE considering owning relatively common coins is gonna get (is getting) a rude wakeup.

Talkiing with another member the other day and we were discussing how he is considering and I already HAVE disposed of every nice (but not GREAT) coin I had.

And don't regret it a bit.

Confirmation seems to be evidencing it in coins lying "unsold" that a few short months ago would have gone quickly.

If you're going to ...COLLECT..... make it either keys, rarity, or outrageous appearance.

    Or let it pass.
  • First thought is AU55, but I can't say I've tried to grade too many of these before. Very nice pickup!

Best coin purchase I ever made was the first time I broke the $10K barrier 30 yrs ago. My only mistake as not buying that coin 11 years earlier when it would have cost under $2K. As already mentioned, as long as it's for a special coin of rarity/condition/key date, etc....you're probably fine. Most 18th century gold is pretty important.

What was the grade, did I miss it? Looks 55.
  • BryceMBryceM Posts: 11,859 ✭✭✭✭✭
Put me in at AU55. Grade aside, it has a nice look. It wouldn't be so horrible to buy/own a coin like this in a details holder. They're amazingly huge, amazingly nice, and amazingly cool no matter the condition. It would be a whole ton easier to buy in a details holder too.

Do the coin a favor and take some great photos after polishing up the slab a bit.

    55.

    congrats!

I am not worthy to grade such a coin. All I can say is I like it a lot...especially from the first pics.
  • stevepkstevepk Posts: 238 ✭✭✭
I'm curious why the auction house did not apply Slab Renew or some comparable plastic scratch solution to the slab. It's a beautiful coin, but the auction house image leaves it unclear whether the scratch on the reverse is on the coin or on the plastic. Your photo, however, clearly shows the scratch on the reverse is on the plastic. I would imagine an auction house photographer would take a few minutes to buff out the scratches on the slab for a more accurate picture. That's just taking pride in your work. Slab renew is no secret. I use it before showing off or taking an image of a slab, and I'm not even a professional.

I would say AU53. I'm not seeing why people are proposing details grades.

Looks 55+/58 to me but in your pic also looks cleaned; so I dunno, either a grade of 53 to reflect that, or if grader had argument with wife that morning, AU details grade.

    It's PCGS AU58.

My picture is worthless and the coin looks more like a combination of the first picture above and this one below.

The coin looks amazing in hand. It does have the golden/orange toning but isn't as splotchy as the first picture.

One line I left out of the catalog description is:
Slight friction over the high points of the devices and in the exposed areas of the obverse fields precludes a Mint State designation.

There are scratches on the holder and one day I will send it in for a reholder and TruView.

The mean cost of coins in my collection is $220 ($805 for PCGS coins)
This coin cost 100x my average, but is 100x better. It's a keeper.

Yeah, if first pic and picture above are what it looks like in hand, sure, I can see a 58.

Not to put down your photo skills (mine suck) but it was the 2nd picture that threw me off.

Great coin; I'd be proud if it were mine.

Not sure I'd have gone 58, but it's a beautiful coin and a worthy "investment."
