Transition to clad set

I have a set of first year clad coins that were struck in silver by accident.

1965 dime and quarter, 1971D half. I don't know how to post a picture.

What do people think about rarity and value?

Have them sent in for authenticity and grading. If they are the real deal, they would worth about agood amount, but not outstanding. Depends on your buying audience.

Fred Weinberg would be the error subject matter expert.

I don't know values, but these are definitely good to have.

I'd like to have a 1965 dime or quarter on a 90% planchet one of these days, as that's my birthyear.

It would be best to get them authenticated - if indeed they are unique, you have an interesting find. Cheers, RickO

They sound nice. They are indeed rare and valuable, although the market for them is rather thin, at those values, compared to some other coins.

PCGS should have a price guide for your coins. That might give you a rough idea. Input your PCGS coin# & see what comes up.

I am surprised that the value would "not be outstanding." I've never seen one of these coins offered, but then again I'm not a big collector of modern coins.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I looked them up, and graded ones sell for appx. $4K to $5K for the 1965 silver dime, and $5K to $10K for the 1965 silver quarter.

    Nice coins.

I'd guess around 20 dimes, ten quarters, and five halfs but I've heard various estimates.

    Mega-cool! Thanks for posting them!

Edit to add: I am STILL kicking myself for not buying a 1966 dime on a 90% silver dime planchet many years ago. Haven't seen one since!

This must have been around 20 years ago more or less, and I think the coin was XF or AU and it was $1,800. Now you know why I'm kicking myself over that lost opportunity.

They are worth 4 figures each, but I suspect you know that already.

Ever thought about expanding your set by getting even more off metals from that era? Personally, I like pieces that are transitional wrong denomination such as; 1964 Lincoln cents struck on clad dime planchets or 1964 Kennedy halves struck on clad 25C planchets.

I'm not sure why people think he is a troll. I have bought a few coins for a decent amount, and have also asked what people think is a good price on them. Basically, I am just trying to figure out if I did good or not. What's the big deal?
