Left for the Manchester Airport, had my coins inspected, upgraded to first class for the 11hr direct flight. Bought some shorts at the airport since English summers are crap and therefore I have none to bring to Anaheim. See you all tomorrow.
Day 1
Tuesday for me started very early, around 12:01am when I woke up jet lagged from the flight over. After forcing myself back to sleep I woke for good at about 2:45am.
I made my way to the ANA for about 8am planning to do lot viewing at Heritage and then get my pass early for entry. As many of you will know, the line for entry to the show to get a badge can be way longer than expected so as the 5th person in line my experience was much more calm.
While in line I struck up a conversation with the guy in front of me who it turns out knew of me from some of the blogs on Doug Winter's site and we struck up a good conversation which lasted the better part of an hour and culminated in a new numismatic friend with seemingly complete overlap in terms of our varied collecting interests and philosophy. Great start!
Speaking of lot viewing, I focused my time on on my areas of specialty, No Motto half eagles and Spanish colonial pieces. There are some very rare and expensive coins in the Spanish colonial offerings with Mexican pieces from 1732 and 1733 which to the uniformed are the very first years of the Mexico City mint and are very rare and expensive. Sadly the coins were really really bad and really really expensive. Similarly, the half Eagles were generally processed and unappealing.
The gates opened as planned at 10am or maybe a bit later and I made my way to see a few of the folks I do most of my business with and proceeded to buy a few coins which were either waiting for me to view or which I had my eye on for weeks but needed to see in hand and once doing so immediately bought including some really amazing Irish early moderns in supremely high grades, and a Mexican Ferdinand VII 8R and Spanish 4R from CRO.
My goals now shifted to buying and selling/consigning enough coins on the floor to pay for my trip out here which was a fun goal to set for myself. I proceeded to walk to floor for the better part of the day buying a few world and US gems in OGH's with the kind of look that just stops you in your tracks, which they literally did and then I literally bought them.
Along the way I ran into some forum folks, Jay at Jay Robinson Coins, Mike Kittle, Mr Eureka, Coinasaurus (who we should all thank for his awesome work on the Newman Numismatic Portal), Rich Uhrich, CoinCast at Witter Coins, along with a few acquaintances not on the forum who I bumped into. I met up with Steveben and him son Trey and spent the rest of the day (and dinner) hanging out with them.

Day 2
Well, I am please to admit that I slept better on Tuesday night waking up at the hospitable hour of 6:43am pacific time which will wreck havoc on my eventual return but made for a much more bearable day on the floor Wednesday morning.
I walked the floor for the first hour on a work conference call, peering in cases and making stupid hand gestures of explanation to the dealers wh certainly were thinking that I was listening to some Beyoncé while I was actually on a call and could not be bothered.
Well I bought a few coins today, two Irish moderns from a familiar source in 65ish grades, an amazing blue specimen set of Irish coins from a random dealer on the floor which I will triple my money on, and it culminated it with the purchase of what is likely the finest known Colombian Cundinamarca 2R in 64 which for the 99% reading this blog I encourage everyone to research the issue as they are uber tough in any grade and s piece is beyond anything I have EVER seen or heard of. Thanks to MrE for that tip as I missed it in my 22nd pass through the floor. Needless to say that was my last check in my checkbook which for some reason I missed in my fictitious checklist of things to verify ahead of hopping on a plane.
My extensive research on 1842 half eagles led me into a lengthy conversation with John Dannreuther who is editing his new book on proof gold (at which point Don Willis walked up and said hello to John which was cool, I should have introduced myself). My input at the show led to a change in to provenance history on the 1842 proof half eagle and a footnote of my name in the upcoming book. Very cool! I am now immortal though I question the practical crap pushed out of my brain to accommodate the random historical facts of who bought a certain coin in a 1910 Thomas Elder sale. Oh well, I have remembered six anniversaries in a row, it can't be to bad yet.
I saw a few folks at the show, revisiting Bigjpst, Illini420 at conjoined get tables, hung out with Steveben for a minute and met with MVS and WPratt who has some amazing Californina gold pieces. Coinlieutenant and SethChandler who I really enjoyed meeting and AmericanaRareCoins where I basically just bragged about some coins in my box where we have overlapping interests.
I hope that my PCGS orders come back tomorrow and that the "Slow Turnarounds " thread persists to 500 as the graders prioritize my show orders over all of your May submissions.
I finished up the day with some career advice from a dealer friend and headed back for dinner and a few beers. Made a new friend at the bar and calling it a night now in anticipation of an early morning.

Day three started off much like days 1 and two hitting the bourse at 9:30 with now a very thin plan after being at the show for two full days. I again started at the back of the room hoping to find something I missed in the previous two days and in fact I did, buying another early Irish modern in 65 for a completely reasonable price.
After hitting the food trucks outside I started making my final rounds, seeing Doug Winter, CRO, the guys at Witter coins and MrE one last time making a purchase of this very cool El Salvador 2R from Mr Agre after eying it the entire show and the weeks preceding.
Sadly my PCGS show orders were not finished after three days and now I have to leave so they will apparently be shipped to me in England which I'm really looking forward to dealing with.
At LAX now ready for the 5 hr flight to JFK and then the 5 hr flight to Manchester (sure puts the size of the US in perspective, huh).
I will image and post pics of all my newps tomorrow.

I, too, would like to hear about everyone's experiences at the show since I can't be there.
This includes the mention of having dinner with this or that forum member(s).
But, please, NO photos of wine bottles or dinner plates!! That is "done to death" elsewhere.

My trip to this one will be somewhat different than Boosibri. Roll out of bed Friday morning, and 10 minute drive in my (non-first class) pickup truck.

Specifically, decent photos of the 1974D aluminum cent, and the gold centennial SLQ and WLH. (The SLQ will probably be there, and they might have an example of the WLH.)

Hope you had better luck than I did. Thanks to Delta, door-to-door Seattle home to Anaheim hotel just took 12 hours! So much for lot viewing...
Well, door to door from England was 14hr with rush hr traffic. -8hrs in time. I'm beat!

I was looking at their table to see if by chance they had a certain half eagle I have been looking for from a series of famous collections. They pulled that crap with me and I could only respond with "yes, I know. You have signs up all over stating that". Can't stand them.

Too bad about your show submission. Does that mean you now have to deal with VAT Taxes? Does PCGS cover the shipping?
No and no. Never have had to pay tax on PCGS shipments to Europe from the US as th customs declaration is "Numismatic Review Return". I think I have to pay shipping which will by $60 x 2 for two orders. It was a gamble that they would get them done in three days, bummer though.

That is a complete bummer about your coins not being done. Totally funny about the conference call and I have been in that exact situation, except mine was while entertaining folks on our boat. At one point I had to have the music shut down and everyone go into total silence for about 2 minutes! I pulled it off though.
