Jeff - You're killing me. Perhaps it can be a new revenue stream for our hosts, 1% of value for added tone.

Milo - Thanks, it's a great hobby and sharing it with others just adds to the enjoyment.

I picked up a couple of slabbed Barber Quarters from Tom Smith in New York last week; a good guy.

Here's a 1900 O that came in an old small white ANACS AU 58 holder. I cracked it out to submit raw:

    image

    image

The coin has nice original surfaces and attractive toning. As a bonus, there's significant die clashes on both sides. There's a star pooping out the back of Miss Liberty's neck! This appears to be a Type II Obverse with a Type III Reverse; the new version.

This one appears to have a Double Die Reverse, although it appears PCGS doesn't recognize it:

    image

    Is it shelf doubling??

Next, a 1894 O in an older PCGS AU 55 holder:

    image

    image

This is a very nice original coin; possibly a 58 on a good day if resubmitted. I might try it someday; the holder isn't in the greatest shape.

This one has a repunched date (the 1 and the 4):

    image

PCGS doesn't recognize it as a variety, however,

Jeff - real nice quarters, I agree Tom is a good person to do business with, be sure to post the results of the crack outs.

Vern - went to the St Louis show, over 100 tables and couldn't find one AU I needed for my half set, talked with Dave Earp, said he would have liked to see you. I didn't know he lived so close to us.

I did buy a crusty 1911 P AU-58 Barber Half that I knew I would eventually have to have, just can't help myself love the dark toned crusty look.

Mike - I do see the quarter I would like to start my set with in the group you posted, haven't bought from an online auction before but I'll figure it out.

Jeff - Those are two neat qtrs. Can't recall a more prominent clash than your 00-O obv. Definitely shelf doubling on the rev. Also, can't recall seeing a 94-O RPD. The 9 looks repunched as well.

Dave - Glad you found something at St. Louis. Sorry I couldn't make it.

I've often wondered if "errors" like the shelf doubling (barely noticeable) and clashes (prominent) on the 1900 O Quarter add or subtract from the coins value or desirability? If an error enthusiast there's certainly interest, but otherwise? Given the opportunity to own the same coin with or without these "defects", which would you choose?

Jeff - As a collector that started out collecting die cracks and clashes, I find that type of coin very desirable and have no problem paying a premium for it. I eventually began collecting the Snow varieties in the Indian cent and Flying Eagle series just for that reason.

I wish I could find more information on the Barber series, I do see the listings in the Flynn book but not much more when it comes to varieties.

Vern - Got the 1911 from EBAY listing nothing in the 100+ table in St. Louis.

    Jeff....Nice quarters...good luck when crossing.

    Re: anomalies on coins & a collector's interest -

It really boils down to the amount of the "error",
I find them interesting but if given a choice I'd
prefer a dramatic die clash - but I wouldn't turn down
a lesser one, either. A perfect die, is preferable, a
hammered strike is also very important.

So, it's no so much the fact that there are anomalies,
but the severity of the errors. The prime importance
is "eye appeal" coupled with a hammered strike.

    So Mike-

If I understand you correctly the clashes don't add or detract from the piece in your eyes? The coins value should be evaluated purely on other criteria? Not questioning; I value your opinion.

Jeff - For me, minor errors don't add or subtract to the desirability of the coin. The quality of the coin itself would be my determining factor. But if I had the choice between two equally desirable 1900-O's, and one had a die clash like yours, I take the die clashed one every time. Same for a RPD.

Dave - Surprised nothing could be found at the show. Good ole ebay.

A new purchase arrived in the mail today, a 1912 Barber Half in a PCGS AU 55 holder. Although I have an AU 58 of this date I've always thought it should be in a 55 holder; it's been one of the coins in my set I wanted to replace. I thought might be nice enough for an AU 58 holder when I purchased it. Here it is:

    image

    image

After seeing it in-hand I feel even more confident it should be in an AU 58 holder; it has nice original creamy lite golden surfaces. I plan to submit it to PCGS to see if it will upgrade, likely as a Reconsideration service level. It's not that I feel the coin may downgrade, but there's a chance it won't upgrade and the coin is now in this holder:

    image

Yes, I know many of you would find it a sin to take it out of this holder, but I want a 58 in my set and this one is much nicer than the AU 58 holdered coin I have. What's interesting about this slab it looks absolutely brand new; not the slightest scratch on it. I guess it never sat in a dealer showcase.

I know submitting it for Reconsideration will cost more than a raw submission (new service level), but if it stays a 55 I would rather have it in the current holder. Any opinions on whether submitting it for Reconsideration would lower my odds for upgrade compared to a raw submission?

Jeff.... I like your new 1912 Phila Half in PCGS 55... For an AU 55.... Not for a 58.

It's a very nice 55, might even get a 55+ if submitted, raw, or reconsideration, makes
no difference, at least to me. I realize submitting it in its OGH 55 holder will be more
costly, than a raw submission. The bottom line ( IMHO ) is its a 55. Pure and simple.
On the off chance it does grade 55+, then I'd be very satisfied with that.

    Edit:
Milo: PM sent - I can't post coins for sale here on the US Coin Forums.
I can allude to them though, so, check out the BST - for my Thread.

    Mike-

You typically get these sort of things correct. You've just affirmed that submitting the coin for Reconsideration is my best option; cracking it would be a mistake.

This coin is nicer than my current 58. It would be interesting to submit them both at the same time for Reconsideration......

That's a nice honest looking '04 O Half without issues.

I had another raw purchase arrive in the mail today, a 1901 Half:

It's a nice looking coin with original skin, slight circulation, and a touch of toning. I'm planning on sending it to PCGS for an extended vacation; hopefully it comes back as a 58.

Jeff - I think your 12 might stay 55 and the 01 has a good shot at 58. I don't have much experience in that realm, so take it for what it's worth. Any of them traveling tomorrow with my friends?

Jim - I just love your set. A lot of great coins in there. Some I would love to own. The 94-O included.

Milo - Beautiful 05-O. Not being as familiar with the quarters, is the 05-O in the quarter series on par for scarcity in XF/AU like the half set?
  • Options
    barberkeysbarberkeys Posts: 4,153 ✭✭✭✭✭
Justin - Good looking dimes (as usual). IMO the 05-O half is tougher in original, problem free XF/AU, but the qtr is still very scarce.

I purchased the '01 Half from mediocre photos advertised as MS (which is what I wanted; I already have a very nice 58), but I don't see it coming back as an MS.

We'll need to see what PCGS says about the '12; it's nicer than the AU 58 I already own. Maybe I'll catch the grading room on a good day, although at current turn-over rate in the grading room I may not live long enough to see the results.....

Justin - Thanks for the compliment on my 05-O quarter. I'm not fluent in Barber half scarcity, so I'm glad Vern chimed-in with his expert opinion. I have to agree with Vern regarding your nice circ dimes. I think it is great to find these nice circ coins and establish a set that is affordable, but still has value. The core of my collection are my Barber quarters, but I also have my side sets that are for fun and not so much stressing about getting certified coins in 55 or 58. Again, good job with the dimes.

Paesan - Super 1904 Barber quarter in 58. It's yet another literally perfect AU coin in your possession.

There's a die crack going through the "2" and a few scuffs to the right. Although the mark do detract a bit from the coins appearance, my guess is PCGS won't be pulling it out of the current holder and inserting it into a details holder on a "Reconsideration" tier.

Jeff, I just revisited your images of the 1912 Half in OGH 55.
The die crack thru the two is a normal occourance and will not
deter the graders about whether or not it's worthy of an upgrade
or not. I've reconsidered my original opinion, I'd like to see it in an
    AU 55+ Retro Holder.

Et Al: A friend / dealer notified me last night that I might be getting
another upgrade for my Quarters. A nice 1907-S in PCGS 58 has come
to light and his business partner is going to the ANA to pick it up. I've
already agreed to buy it, if it "makes the grade" with his partner. He
has already found a home for my recent purchase at Summer FUN of
    my 1907-S in 53. Funny how this date has been dancing all around me;
    I have three 07-S Quarters at auction at Heritage - ending 8/28 & 8/30:
PCGS 25, 45 and UNC Details. I really shouldn't even concern myself
about this date any longer as I bought a nice 65 off of Harry Laibstain a
couple of months ago, when I became frustrated about not finding any
nice AU 58's !!! Patience has never been my long suit.

Vern...It's very hard to believe that Dan's 1909-O Half is only a 53.
Looks much nicer, I'd say an AU 55+. I bought the same date a couple
of years ago in XF 45... Best looking 45 I had seen .. Sent it in for a regrade
( in the 45 holder - and not for reconsideration ) I wanted them to crack it
out of the 45 holder and have the graders look at it raw. It came back as a 50.

Have not checked eBay in a few days - and found nothing that I "had to have"....
until I was about to log off and I found a nice [ common dated ] Dime.

A 1910 - Phila in PCGS 58 for my Everyman set. Its a real stunner too !

Copied the images - went onto Photobucket - downloaded them.
Went to Copy and Paste here - NOPE !!! I had to sign up for another
year's worth of Storage. Its cheap enough - $ 38.33 for 12 months - for
    5K of storage - I only use 25% of that a year - so - why not ?!

I go thru the Pay Pal system - all goes smoothly - I will be billed thru
my checking account the $38.33 - so - I log back into Photobucket - I
try and copy an image - the system takes me back to Billing - now,
the economy option is gone - and they want to sell me 10K [ G?] of
storage - if I didn't have so much on that system, I'd listen to others
    who have gone elsewhere.

Guess I'll call them on Monday and straighten this out.

Mike - I look forward to seeing pics of the 07-S qtr in 58. Not a date that comes along every day. I agree that Dan's 09-O half has a lot of meat for a 53. Somebody was having a bad day in the grading room when it went through. And congrats on the new dime.

I did purchase the OGH AU 55 '12 Half on eBay. I bought it to add to my collection, not to sell. I've decided not to submit it to PCGS for reconsideration; not much of a chance at a 58, and it will still be the same coin. I replaced the AU 58 half in my set with the new AU 55. I guess I'm not taking the Registry competition as seriously as I was. I've always known it's the coin, not the holders, that are important. I'm finally accepting that Registry points aren't all that important.

Log Potato: Thanks for the kind words. lots of trial and error in my Barber "education" over the years. Original skin, problem-free coins are worth the search for me, hence the "no headlights" moniker. The 94-O half proved tricky to find with the look I like. Been working on this set several years and it's funny that I'm down to 5 coins and still don't have a 97-P or 98-P! I have seen a couple that went for more than I was willing to spend. Anybody has either coin let me know!!
