As if the First Spouse series couldn't get worse...........

Lets be honest...........
The First Spouse series is a bust with only interest being futile attempts to see what issue is lowest mintage.
It is IMO about to get a lot worse.
Coin collecting is dominated by older white males who are not going to be eager to lay out $800 or so for a Mrs Obama coin or a William Clinton First Spouse.
These two will IMO finally kill what little interest is left in actually collecting the series..............

So it could be awhile before we see Bushes, Clinton(s), Obama or even Carter.

The stipulation that the issue must be done post-mortem technically exists, but I'd be surprised if they actually minted a one-off issue following the eventual death of a now-living first spouse, given the lack of enthusiasm for the series.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...

Older white males ??? sounds like profiling ....Coin collecting slowly dying out by money concerns / lack of new young collectors. 1st spouse coins were surely not bought by just old men...
Absolutely no interest at all......same with the Presidential Dollars.
I just don't see why they put stuff like this out.......actually I do.....$$$$$$$$$$

Read the law. This won't be allowed under the current statute. They will not get coins unless congress passes another law. Highly unlikely.
I wouldn't buy them if they were a dollar each.
And let me be the first to say, I'd buy these all day long at a dollar each. You would too.
Unless, of course, you're not willing to buy 24k gold for $2 an ounce. In which case, I'd call you nuts.
I wouldn't buy them if they were a dollar each.
Are you serious? They contain a half ounce of gold and you can flip them for at least melt value and then buy a bunch of dimes. I'll buy all I can get for a dollar each.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I forgot they were gold. I would pay 1/2 of what they were worth in gold and flip them.
Wouldn't pay more than 50 cents for the prez dollars. and would flip them.
I likes them at spot...
I haven't been following that program at all. Is the intention to issue spouses who are still alive and kicking?
If the intention was to commemoratehonor the spouse, why should it matter if they are dead or alive?
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
My understanding has been that Nancy Reagan's next month will (mercifully) be the last, and that no additional ones are scheduled.

Otherwise mebbe we'll see a first "lady" coin for Bubba Clinton.
Dealers or collectors, are spouse coins bought or sold in your average coin shop? If so are they going for any kind of premium beyond gold Eagles?
I only have one-- A Grace Coolidge PCGS MS70 FS. I did not pay much more for the slab.

Dimeman.. Perhaps you forgot Rule 5 to Forum postings? Think about it.
OP... You are flat out wrong on this one. The series is about to get very ,very interesting in my opinion. First, there is strong demand for many of the coins right now with the series about to (essentially) close. Which ones? Keep an eye out for the August Anaheim Heritage sale where (for the first time) a complete set of First Strike "70" coins from 2007-2015 will cross the auction block. Watch some of the prices realized for these PCGS coins. Second, there is strong demand from a particular type of collector right now. More on this after the auction in August.
As always, just my two cents.

If you hold them long enough, melt value will cover more than what you paid.
That is probably true for most any series that is made of gold. I've made paper profits on my collection of modern commemative $5 and $10 gold pieces strictly for that reason. The question is how much buying power will those dollars you get from selling these pieces have? Gold investment is more of a hedge against inflation than a real investment.

I do not collect this series, but I suspect that anyone who does, will be handsomely rewarded in the future. We need to revisit this thread in 5+ years.

MIGHT AS WELL TAKE THIS SERIES TO THE NEXT LOGICAL LEVEL!!

I'd guess that many coin collectors are on their 2nd and even 3rd spouses.
The nominee for the GOP is on his 3rd spouse, his first was an American but the latter two were imports.

This would maybe inspire others to get into an activity, sport, or something useful.
For Kennedy maybe Sailing was one of his favorites, a great pursuit for anyone. For Jimmy Carter, maybe
he could be shown building a house for " Habitat for Humanity". And for Bill Clinton, I'm not really sure if
he actually did much of anything... did he? Well, maybe he just enjoyed relaxing at his Desk, sharing a Cigar?
As I said from the very beginning, there are a lot of First Ladies as well as presidents who are not noteworthy enough to rate a commemorative coin. This series should never have been started the first place.
Just more PCishness by congress . . .

When the get around to Bill they could release a series of first victim coins one for each scandal
WHO THE HECK IS ALICE PAUL????
Alice Paul never married, which of course made her a natural choice for a First Spouse coin.
Her coin was a stand-in for the administration of Chester A. Arthur, who was unmarried during his tenure as President. She was born a few months before he left office.

Wondercoin.
Alice Paul was a suffragist. It says so right on the coin!

Ah. I was pretty sure there hasn't been a President Paul
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
These are a wonderful way to stack pure gold, on top of each other, beside each other or however you would like at or near spot.
Just ask your dealer when you go to sell them.
If they are not taken too seriously, the Spousal units, they can be rewarding and fun.
To stack.
The point is being missed here, by many.

I agree................to stack.
Everyone needs to be honest with themselves. When you go take a look at your current collection do you ever pull out the first spouses to look at? Hell no is the answer.

With respects to the series, these are some of the smallest mintages of gold coins produced at the mint. It provides a tremendous opportunity for those willing to see the "silver" lining. While many are only chasing to the low mintage Queen, the semi keys have some really low mintages as well. While demand is not strong currently for these coins, it doesn't take much to move the market in a series where 90% of the series contains coins with sub 5k mintages in MS (6K proof), and 50% or so of the series below 3k ms (4k proof) mintages.
The liberty sub set might be the best advertising for this series in the long run. Classic beautiful designs with roughly 5-6k of them to go around, always out there being bought and sold, quietly advertising the series.
Spouses provide a great long term storage of wealth. Roughly 35 oz of gold puts a nice floor on the downside risk of owning the series. As the metal prices move, so will the series. In the long term, I see gold being more valuable than it is currently.
If mintages and rarity aren't your thing, Miles has mentioned its a great way to stack some gold and really affordable premiums. I would much rather have a 1/2 oz of gold in spouse form (that has an outside shot of having some collector premium down the road) than another gold coin (eagle, maple, panda etc) that only tracks with spot and has zero chance of having any other possibility to make me more money when it comes time to sell.

That's certainly true in most of the Victorian novels I've read, but only if one marries wisely!
