Your "Not-A-Fan-Of X Coin" Coin

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,942 ✭✭✭✭✭
Do you have one or more of these? Coins that you don't care much for, but for which you have a nice example?

It occurred to me years ago that the coin I had the most of were Frankies, though I pretty much hate them. They were what I got cheap when I was stacking silver.

Similarly, I'm not a huge fan of Morgans.

It's not like I hate them. I understand their prominence and importance, and I get the romance. I just prefer Peace dollars.

Anyway, I was searching for an iconic Morgan several years ago and I found this one. It's got everything I could want: incredible strike, amazing mirrored fields, gorgeous warm brown smoke tone around the periphery. Black & white cameo. Chrome frost. Slabbed, a 66, and it was cheap. 1881-S Morgans are a dime a dozen. So I got an icon for a fraction of what other collectors would pay for a similar coin in just about any other year or MM. The price of these has dropped, too. You can pick up a 66 NGC for $300 or less.

Do you have an example, an icon, a place-holder of a series you don't care for?

I have a difficult time looking at anything dated 1965 or newer, unless it's a Kennedy half, then it has to be dated 1970 and older. I have just about 0 desire for modern stuff. The spaghetti noodle hair Washington quarters are just horrendous!!

Actually yes I do. I have a couple of Morgans in circulated condition that I have absolutely no idea how I came into possession of. They were buried deep in my tool box which was even more mystifying. They had developed pretty color so I decided to preserve them and had PCGS slab them just for fun. An F12 and an XF40.

When I croak my kids can sell them for lunch money.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Franklin half dollars have my vote for most hideous and boring design of all time. Ben's mullet, the eagle you can barely see and just how boring and unappealing the entire series is.

Franklin Half Dollars for specificity and Classic Commemoratives (for the most part, although I do like a few of the designs (Texas, San Diego, Pan-Pac Half and San Diego are in my Type Set)) as a series.

Never been a fan of any small size dollars starting with SBA...and God love him but the Ike is ugly.

The Franklin reverse was thrown together; the anemic eagle was an afterthought to comply with regs that required one to be part of the design

Barber coinage in general. I've been going thru the archived issues of the "Numismatist" and they weren't at all popular when they were being minted, either.

This is a great thread where "What one person may see as beautiful, another may see just the opposite".

I am ashamedly surprised that there is not any bashing in the this thread, and hope that it continuously stays that way.

For me it would have to be Kennedy halves and Liberty nickels. I have a few of each in my collection, but could care less for them.

I like all the coins I have...even some 'ugly' ones.... I am just a coin nut. That being said,

I do not purchase ugly coins...however, I am frequently given some....relatives etc.... Cheers, RickO

As a type collector I don't care much about the Nickel Three Cent piece. I find the coin boring and unattractive. BUT if I am to have a complete type set of U.S. I need ONE. So here it is.

    imageimage
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I've grown tired of the Frankie Half too....

But I come to the distaste honestly. The first thing I did when I got interested in coins was build a raw, always white, and mostly uncirculated, set of them. It was a good learning exercise in mint-state identification and grading....so it wasn't a wasted effort.

I just don't need to go there again....

I still have them all, and should go back and see if any are accidentally "exceptional". It would have to have been an accident, given my experience at the time. image

I was once 5 coins away from a complete set of Morgans when I realized I really didn't like them. I do have a couple, and I like to look at high-grades that someone else owns, but no interest in collecting.

I'm sure i'm in the minority and I really like the reverse, but the face of the seated liberty, is one only a mother could love.

I like the Seated design well enough, but it was used on virtually every denomination and was used for far too long. It's also annoying how the neck juts up straight out of her left shoulder. Once you see that, it's impossible to "un-see" it.

I have a couple of least favorites (Rosies and Frankies), but like a dutiful soldier I've included reasonably nice examples in my type set. I'll post them when I get to a computer that allows me to upload the photos.

I don't like anything modern. But I love my UHR.

I dislike Ike's but I own one as part of a silver dollar type set.

I'm not a Franklin fan but own a few eye appealing ones.

Very small coins are hard for me to enjoy. But I have a pretty 1829 HD.

I'm dreadfully tired of Washington quarters. But I've saved a couple of raw 1932's.
