    That 1733 Pillar 8R is magnificent.

    As some of you probably know, the lion's share of known 1732 and 1733 Mexico 8 reales (the key dates in the series) come from the salvage of the 1733 Fleet, which was located off Florida. Their abysmal typical condition and hard-to-read surfaces provided the entree into the market for some fairly persuasive 1732 and 1733 counterfeits, which imitate a shipwreck coin's texture and color. Those two dates are ones for which, even moreso than usual, expert authentication is mandatory.

    Ones like the one depicted are so rare as to essentially not exist.

    Thanks for the compliment Dave, and what an UBER COOL COIN! I've been a serious collector of Bolivia since '04. I actually started collecting Bolivia a few months before meeting my wife (who, as it turns out, is from BOLIVIA). We visited there last December and now, through a series of events, have the VP from Banco Central arranging to have a meeting with us this coming August to discuss using my collection (pictorially) to accompany the text of the next printing of their book. The last printing (1999) just sold out about a year ago. We are also in discussion about printing a catalog for the 2013 Exposition in Potosi to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the minting of the first independent coinage of S. America (Rio de La Plata, struck in Potosi)., also using the pictures from my collection. I'll try to post images of my set of R.d L.P. 1/2 through 8 Reales later today. In the meantime...

    Technically, any Uncirculated or MS coins don't count, because they never "circulated" in Colonial times! image

    I have a 1738 one bit around here some place. If I find it, I'll post some pics. Given to me by my uncle in the early 60's it is still the oldest coin in my collection.

    I also found this piece in my stack of love tokens. Same size as the half dimes, but a century older at 1782. Obviously this has seen better days, why it has 5 holes in it is unknown to me. At least the Mexico City mint mark is clearly visible. If anyone can give me more info on this and why it is holed, I'd appreciate it.

    And it reminded me that Ireland used real and half-real for sixpence and threepence in the Irish inscription for those denominations.



    The British three halfpence coins were not minted for Maundy money, but used in Jamaica for quarter reals or "Christian quatties".
