But a tough coin, so it has that going for it.

I see surfaces with all the random wear that you'd expect from an XF 45 coin. And I don't see any hairlines from abrasion.
Show me a diffently lighted image that's not blazed out in flash and I'll make an opinion.
<< <i>You know what? I'll be a contrarian and say that I'm not convinced it's been harshly cleaned or whizzed.

The cheek is the tell tale to me. Looks like a baking soda job. Don't think a different picture would change my opinion. Definitely not whizzed in my opinion. Wish you guys would sell me some coins with details like this at XF money!

<< <i>XF Details -- Harshly Abrasively Cleaned >>
A great deal for the guy looking for an AU coin to fill that hole in his album. Price would be in $650 range. If severe cleaning marks probably less.
Coin looks too glossy...coin is AU 53 details ( IMHO )

Grade in original post.
It looks cleaned from the images, I agree that's not the same as in hand.
I think they slab lots of cleaned coins...just not mine
Doesn't mean it wasn't cleaned, just that they make exceptions for scarcer dates.

It means it wasn't cleaned to me, and................oh ya, PCGS. I'll take their opinion all the way to the bank, thank you!
I like the slab pic
Looks to be a high end 45 to me although it's not my series.
Plenty of detail and some luster as well.

LOL -- look up the term "market acceptable."

I personally wouldn't feel foolish following the herd like everyone did, so relax. It's when you still follow the herd, once proven wrong, where I would draw the line.
3 graders and a finalizer, with the coin in hand, works for me. Time to own up. If a blind man leads a blind man, they will both fall into the pit!

I never wrote that it was cleaned, but it was certainly dipped and looks dipped out. That is what "OUCH!!!" is for. That makes me a hater for this coin, as I think it is an example of what folks should not buy if their goal is to avoid dipped coinage.
If it was dipped, it was dipped in the 1950's or prior. I 100% know this was put away then, and did not see the light of day until I took a shot of it. Blame my photo skills and the white light I use before the professionals at PCGS.
the coin flat sucks, should not have been holdered, I guess PCGS figured it was market acceptable, and yes, I see them in auctions all the time, but personally would not want to own it. This is a coin I would want to get rid of fast.
I'm similar to TOM B and some of the other great eyes on here, I know a nice coin when I see it and un fortunately, this isn't it.
I get them too in collections, and they have to go somewhere.
Neat coin!

Well, seems I should just not respond at all... And yes, I have every intention of keeping my day job.
I don't wish to talk about any ones coins, but when coins are put on the forum for opinions, I figure the Op wants honest opinions:

I love honest opinions, and anyone who has been here knows I give them.
Now, you are welcome to keep giving your opinion as long as you don't change anything. If you hate a coin, I am going to send it in for grading so fast my own head will spin! If you really hate it, I will be looking for top pop.
Wabbit! Take it from a Barbernut...yes that is my registry set handle. Your coin is very unsettling for us registry set holders as it is an outlier that pulls down the value that many of us have paid BIG BUCKS FOR!! Your coin truly sucks and is a coin that should be in a details cleaned holder. I will fight you to my grave based on the pictures you have given.
Ouch!
But, based on those pictures, I too am surprised it got in a holder. I guess a severely overdipped coin can get holdered if there are not too many hairlines.

No reason to fight me, 3 professional graders and a finalizer gave it the grade. It is never fun to be dead wrong and I feel for you and your herd mentality. I simply can't be offended, but these comments are certainly entertaining!

Assuming the 2nd picture above was the original "evaluation" photo, it seems that the problem isn't necessarily the coin....IT WAS THE PICTURE!!
It does look horrid/worked/cleaned/whatever in that picture.
Now, the picture in the slab shows a much more acceptable coin. Maybe not acceptable to everyone....but much more natural in appearance.
Regardless, this coin lacks any indication that it was circulated for an XF coin. It's been messed with. Either dipped or other. I have been carrying two unc silver coins for a year that have more dirt than this coin. Maybe I have dirty pockets.
Super clean XF now . . .
