New Purchase: Classic Head half eagle

jonrunsjonruns Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭✭✭
The 1836 is one of the most common Classic Head half eagles with over half a million minted and 2000 graded at the two services.

I purchased it from the recent Stacks auction and I was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived today...I was in bed all day with the flu on a rainy, dreary day...and it really brightened me up.

My goal is to try to complete the 8-coin Classic Head $5 Gold series.

I will be sending this one to PCGS to try to cross.

    That's a beauty !
The classic head five was one of my first gold coins as a kid. I'm sure I found a few more over the years. Always liked them.

That is a noble goal, and one that I have considered doing. The trouble is the 1834 crosslet 4, 1838-C and 1838-D are all bears. The 1834 crosslet 4 coin is as tough or tougher than the southern mint coins. Finding an attractive 1838-C is very difficult. I paid way over the book for mine, which is an NGC AU-58 which would probably cross as a PCGS AU-55. Among "the big three," the 1838-D is actually the easiest to find.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I tried to assemble a set of those back in the 1980's before slabs. I had some nice coins but never did find an 1838-C that I liked.

Very nice coin... from the pictures, it looks as if it will cross... best of luck - let us know.

Congrats on your purchase. Hope you go for the set, a decent challenge with a shorter set of an under appreciated coin.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.
