Poll: How much would a fool pay for this toned Morgan?

I've got eBay bucks to spend and I've had this coin on my watch list for a couple of months.
It's a PCGS MS63

I like the colors on it, but it does have a lot of marks on the face, cheek and neck

That along with the price has been making me hesitate on pulling the trigger.
Who knows, now maybe one of you will buy it and make my decision easier

The pricing on toned coins is pretty wild and is much more like art than technical coin prices.

The price guide on this MS63 is $64
At what price do you think it becomes stupid money?

If it has been on your "watch list" for any period of time, nobody else is interested in in at it's present price. Ask for a reduced amount, the worst thing they can say is "no".

I voted $200 because it has "monster color" that might attract a poorly informed bargain hunter who thinks it has $400 to $500 color. I could see this easily getting $100 without a lot of heavy lifting from a poorly informed or less than truthful dealer.

As for reality, the underlining coin was probably an MS-63 that has since seen some time in an "easy bake oven."

I am not a fan of the color or what's underneath the color. It's amazing that I virtually never saw coins with this look when I collected Morgans in the 1990s. When toning started to become a big money maker, dealers & collectors did all sorts of things to tone their common date BU Morgans- put them in paper envelopes, in albums, on windowsills, in a pile of Taco Bell napkins, etc.- and there is now a flood of colorful coins on the market that were blasty white roll coins just 20 years ago. MS63 Morgans are worth $40, and this coin has a bad enough cheek to be an MS62- so I'd pay about $25 for it. I didn't vote in the poll because it only went down to $100. I am well aware that my suggested prices are far below what others are paying.
It should be noted that I collect pretty toned proof Type. I seldom pay any premium at all for nice color. It only becomes a major factor when a proof Barber or Seated coin has unimaginable color and resides in a PR67 or PR68 holder. Why are MS62, common, junk-date Morgans worth a 10X premium when they tone nicely? I feel like putting a roll of 1881-S dollars on my sunny windowsill here in Texas, with different kinds of paper underneath them, to see if I hit the toner lottery.

I've seen that coin on the bay, and their asking price for that toning is far too high. I've bought my share of toners over the years and probably have overpaid for quite a few, but I would pass on that one unless it came down to about $100-$150 or so. I'm not sure how the luster is in hand, but it appears that toning is a bit thick and mutes it.

For a perspective, I got this MS-65 for quite a bit less than the OP's coin. Not a monster by any stretch, but lustrous and very attractive in hand.

Not even a $100 piece,in my opinion. Those well-defined lines of color through "PLURIBUS" make me suspect AT. Buy for $50,ask $100.Take $75.Have lunch with a friend with the $25 profit.

Just bullion value as sorry to say but based on the image the color doesn't look legit. Surface wise it looks like it was once cleaned and then funkily retoned. Whoever submitted this and it graded like almost won the Powerball lottery as the chances of it regrading non details are slim to none. It would be a fun coin to resubmit a dozen times to see in which holder it ends up. I'll vote a $100 just to make the poll vanish but would rather buy a pizza then go $25 on this.

First, you need to consider the fact that that particular Morgan was once in a Questionable Color holder with PCGS. Sold here on GC as an AT piece:

    http://www.greatcollections.co...GS-Genuine-Unc-Details

Second, consider this: the coin could actually be NT. Shotgun end-roll toning where the paper folds curled over the edges. That is why the toning is not as progressed at the rims and has an "opposite" progression.

Just food for thought. I am a toning watchdog and I calls them as I sees them. I am skeptical, but honest and present both sides where applicable. This is a coin that could go either way.

If it were white, I think 62 is probably a more likely grade. So I think part of the "premium" for color was probably baked into the grading, (pun not intended). image

Anyway, that may be another reason to not stretch too far on the price.....

Stupid money is not what I would pay. If a person wanted to "dump" it, he ought to. If he wanted to parade it, then he could do that, as well. But, if he wanted to collect it , it would not be paraded or put under public scrutiny in my humblest opinion. Just saying mate. In essence, this thread is good advertising for the seller, just the same.
Good luck to him and may the road rise to meet those soles on the way to the bank of whomever enjoys it most. Buyer/Seller/Spectator… I like the color and added drama this place brings to it more than the added value of the brand.

That is a lot of money for an 1884-O dollar which known to be a date that was well struck and available in attractive condition. Under the color this is a $50 coin on the Gray Sheet. The extra $699 seems like a high price for a tint that some find to unatractive and qestionable. To the newer collectors, you should take these comments under consideration before you make a commitment. "One way" purchases are not fun in the long run.

All that color on Morgans does nothing for me. Too many ways to get screwed so someone can say ooooh and ahhhh.

The only toning for me is the natural silver tendency to darken over time. All that color hides the facial marks and looks like a circus token.

Thanks to y'alls input, I've lost interest in this coin.
I was watching it hoping it would go down or have a best offer. I have some toned coins in a watch list and in the small picture it seemed to stand out

There are some real pretty ones out there, but people want $1,000+ for them which is something I'm not willing spend, even with $500 off with eBay bucks.

I'm a firm believer in going with first impressions. In any event, the coin that sold for $70 plus change in a Genuine holder now resides in a 63 holder and is a $60 coin. The toning is not spectacular and the cheek of Liberty is baggy on this common-date coin.Pay,say $250, for a coin like this and have dealers you show it to pass on purchasing it for more than $50 for the rest of time? $750?image
