NEWP: Illinois/Lincoln Commem

I've seen enough of these commems to know that the deep brown toning, approaching black, is fairly common. And I love it, and have actively been seeking one with this look in my price range. It must have something to do with the packaging they were sold in? I know at least one dealer here loves the look too.....but maybe not everyone.
I like this coin design for several reasons. The eagle is great, and I've always liked the beading on the rim, as used on SLQ's. Technically, it's not required for a US type set....but I am easily distracted.
What do you think: Attractive toning, or over-done and damaged?
I voted with my wallet....Definitely attractive.
(Great Collections photo....I haven't seen the coin yet).

Nice one. I think that you'll be pleased assuming that the luster is all there making the darker tones pop.
Agree: The luster will make or break it for me too. But at MS-65, I'm Assuming the luster will be there. *fingers crossed*
Always enjoyed this design.
But what matters is if you will like it.
Congrat's!!
100,058 pieces coined during August 1918 at the Philadelphia Mint with 58 pieces reserved for annual assay, none melted. The obverse was designed
and modeled by George T. Morgan, the reverse by John R. Sinnock. Distributed by The Illinois Centennial Commission, Hugh S. Magill, Jr., Director of
the Centennial Celebration.

Commems and Early Type
The Lincoln commemorative half dollar has a very strong design. The obverse, with the unusual beardless Lincoln, has been called "George Morgan's masterpiece." For those who have looked at more of his work beyond the dollar that bears his name, this is clearly among his best designs. John Sinnock, of Franklin half dollar fame designed the reverse, which is also striking.
Most folks here will like it better than one in my set which is an almost mark-free MS-64 that has been dipped.

I quite like it and I'll bet the luster will carry the day.
Congrats!

Not sure I know how to handle unanimous approval.
Obviously, I've made a terrible error.
Newer collectors to this series have no idea what it was like to find colorful toned example prior to the internet. You'd have to really get a lot of miles on the brouse floor just to find a few monsters if any at all when attending major shows. It also didn't help that then was the mega dipping era as there was a fear anything with color would turn black once encapsulated.

Just kidding! Lovely coin from a native of the Land of Lincoln.

Decent coin. Hard to believe MS65's are going for $200+.
Particularly since PCGS price guide lists it at $485 in 65. Looking at past GC sales, $250 might be more accurate...but there's a pretty wide range.
I honestly wasn't sure WHAT the look would do to the price...force it up, or hold it back. But since I REALLY wanted it, I had, shall we say, a healthy safety margin built into my max bid. But I was fairly shocked when I got it at $204 (without the juice).
As has been said in many other threads, commems seem to be rather unpopular right now. I doubt I'll be shooting for a full commem set, or even type set...but there are 2 or 3 other designs I really like, so maybe I'll go fishing for those in the near future while the price is right?
...I think I like yours more.
