Finally added a Charlotte piece to the box of 20

USMarine6USMarine6 Posts: 2,102 ✭✭✭✭✭
So I've been on the hunt for an affordable Charlotte piece for over a year and a half now. Being a working stiff It was hard to find something decent that I could afford. Well the right coin came along with a price that was workable. It has a very low mintage with only 160 or so survivors. Its the first coin I've owned that is truly what I consider rare. So enjoy if you do and feel free to post your Charlotte gold.

Thanks. I do think PCGS was a little generous with this one though.

Southern gold is not comparable to other Mints IMHO and I think the grading from the big companies reflects that as well. I love the coin!!

    Great pickup.

I really need to start considering the box of 20. Heck even a 2 boxes at this point.

Very nice. One of my goals is to have a US coin from each mint. I have three to go. "C" is one of them. image

While I realize that your budget is limited I'm afraid that I have to disagree with most of the posters regarding this coin. It strikes me as a piece that has far too many marks for the grade on both the obverse and the reverse. The fact that is from the Charlotte mint can't save it. I have no idea what you paid for it but, unless it was significantly discounted from the normal price for an XF40 you will have a problem when it comes time to sell.

I agree with 291-5th also. Although the coin looks as if it has been through some rather rough handling, I would venture that as long as you're happy with the acquisition of such a tough date/mint..., then that is the most important thing.

That said, I'll share my pair of "bookends".

Nice! Congrats. Got a link to the rest of the Box of 20? I always like seeing what people put in theirs.

Except maybe for the person who has a box of 20 1964 Kennedy halves. I forget who that is. It's a person I like, but I totally don't get the idea behind the "All-1964-Kennedy Box of 20" concept. image

I certainly agree that it may not be a coin for everyone especially for the purest. The pictures used certainly make look worse than it does in hand but yes I am happy with it and at the price point I acquired at Im not worried about when It comes time to resell.

CD: Nice looking 38 I love the obverse MM and Ill have one of those some day

LordM: I sold off a few of the box of 20 in order to get this one. So its more like a box of 15 at the moment. Sometime soon Ill learn how to link. Also please go back to the holy hat picture avatar. I like it soooo much better. LOL

Being at around 17-18 pieces in my current B20 after some reshuffling (hopefully to make room for a few nice pieces!), I totally know what that's like! image

I'll probably still put on the old Holey Hat avatar now and again, though it's 11 years obsolete. (Maybe when I want to feel "young" again, LOL)

Both of the major grading services tend to be generous with the grades for southern gold. I've found that it is harder to get high grade (True AU and Mint State) examples of the Charlotte coins than the Dahlonega pieces. I think that the people in the Charlotte area tended to use their coins more while the Dahlonega people tended to leave their coins in banks or family hoards. I also believe that the Dahlonega Mint put out a better product, especially in the 1850s.

Here is my most generously graded Charlotte Mint coin. The mint luster and sharpness on this 1842-C half eagle justifies the AU-58 grade, but the surfaces are "too bright." Believe it or not when I purchased this piece, there was another one of the same variety on the bourse floor that looked virtually the same as this piece. It was graded Mint State 61 and cost more than double the price of this piece.
