Backorder at 10 minutes after sales started.

Looks like I was close to nailing it, 25k sold in 10 minutes. Faster than Truman and Ike and 8k more... Impressive.

From cheez's post/purchase, nearly 14k orders have taken place at the mint since the backorder. While all orders are not these sets, this would put roughly 27k orders taken today.

Also to note, the mint stated 40k has been sold in the first hour. PascoWA gave us an order number at 10:19 which is just over an hour into the sales. Since then, nearly 4000 orders have been placed.

I would estimate a max 3000 sets left. Looks like it could go dark within the next 3 or so hours.

    From Harper:

As of 4:40 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the U.S. Mint had sold 44,563 of a possible 50,000 John F. Kennedy Coin and Chronicles set.
It is the third such set in 2015 that includes a reverse proof Presidential dollar. The first one, honoring Harry, Truman, sold out in 15 minutes June 30 with a mintage of 17,000.
The second one, honoring Dwight D. Eisenhower, also sold out in minutes accompanied by some Mint website problems, Aug. 11. Mintage was 17,000.Kennedy has three times the mintage, but that has not deterred buyers.
In the first 10 minutes of sales, online buyers grabbed 25,000 of the sets. By the end of the first hour, 40,000 had been accounted for.
Shipping of the first 25,000 sets sold has begun. The remainder are on backorder with a likely in-stock date of Oct. 15. -

Good stuff for speculation and pricing in the wild and untamed secondary market (check the BST for the glut).
Now riding the swell in PM's and surf.

The second batch of 25K orders could ship before the FS deadline. It does not take long to mint 25K coins, though they are from philly so probably not as good quality as west point.

    << <i>Just ordered about 5 minutes ago, totally forgot, USM035637xx, 0506 eastern time 9/17. >>

    That's 29K orders from mine.

    Ready for some fancy numberin'?

<< <i>As of 4:40 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the U.S. Mint had sold 44,563 of a possible 50,000 John F. Kennedy Coin and Chronicles set. >>

I found a post from around 5pm (not here), who had an order number of USM03561xxx, or around 27K orders. If 45K had been sold, that means there's around 1.67 sets per order.

If 29K orders had been placed by 5am, that means some 48.3K sets have been sold, or 1.7K from sell out.

If between 5pm and 5am, 2K orders have been placed, that comes to some 300 sets/hour. That would put sell out between 10 and 11am this morning. image

(Yes, I'm doing backups and was bored.)

Another thought. They had 25K ready to ship. The original production run was only supposed to be 25K before the Truman somehow surprised the Mint. I wonder if they struck all the coins at once, or had to do a second production run of 25K...
It would be hilarious if there were differences in the coins between the first and second batches, no? image

Back order date has been changed to Sept. 28. All coins could easily be first strike eligable.

    Per email from the mint:
Tom Jurkowsky, director of the U.S. Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications, said in an e-mail. "Of those orders, approximately 78% were via desktop computers, 16% via the Mint’s new mobile app and 6% via social media … After the first hour, sales totaled over 40,000 units."

Jurkowsky said that the Mint will start shipping the first 25,000 sets immediately and expects all customer orders will be fulfilled by early October.

One thing that will make it hard to calculate when they will sellout, is no one has any idea how many orders have been cancelled. I would assume that thousands of people who bought these to flip, but then got backordered, have cancelled their orders after seeing the low sales prices on eBay.

Gee, I wish I could manage a return of 70% on any item purchased within a 1 month period. I suspect that your guess on cancellation is wrong, and it appears, per Tom Jurkowsky, that most if not all, will be mailed in time to potentially qualify for the "coveted fs" designation. image

<< 2015 John F. Kennedy Coin & Chronicles Sets are closer to selling out. More than 40,000 sold after the first hour and sales by the end of the day reached 45,613 for 91.2% of the maximum 50,000.

Collectors who bought early are already receiving shipping notices. For new orders, an updated backorder date of Sept. 28 is an improvement from yesterday’s quickly posted in-stock date of Oct. 15. That should hasten a sellout
    >>

Only a little over 4,300 left as of this morning and backorder date is now within the first strike range. A sellout is near!

Also HSN will blow thru their first batch quickly and go on a buying spree. It will be easy to double your money or more on these

Anyone that wants the lion's share of my position today at less than double cost, please send me a PM for an easy deal.

That said, I am also not sure why anyone would want to cancel a $121 order for two sets today when they can ship it right this minute to myself (or probably other buyers) for an easy profit after a simple PM exchange?

Not necessarily. I sold my pair of Eisenhower sets within an hour of the time they went on sale. Sold the pair for $449.99 on eBay. Recent sales on eBay show a pair of sealed sets going for $100 less than that on average. For the Eisenhowers, anyone who did pre-sale or is still holding has left money on the table.

These will rebound, no reason that they are only a few bucks over mint issue. Grade rates could be just as low as IKE and Truman. First strike boxes sealed will rise from here. Backordered boxes might not fair as well.

I'd disagree. To me, pre-sale is when orders are unconfirmed, the item has not gone on sale to the general public, and therefore the secondary market price has not yet been established. When I sold my coins, I had confirmed order status from the mint and the secondary market was already on fire and prices were consistently selling at that secondary value of $400+ per pair. Either way you define pre-sale, the peak price attained on the Eisenhowers was about an hour or so after they went on sale so in that case patience was not the name of the game.

<< <i>Last 2 were $71 and $77. Ikes and Trumans were never this low. >>

The Trumans and Ikes were 1/3 the mintage and were gone in 15 minutes versus 1+ day. In addition, with the declaration that the Johnson will be 25K, they are the keys to this series. It's foolish to try to equate the two, especially since the JFK is still available (albeit on backorder) from the Mint. (For some reason, "sold out" equates to "higher price".)

Personally, I suspect the JFK will be the dog of the 2015 special finish brassbuck set. image (Few seem to like the coin itself, but a lot seem to like the Mohawk design of the NA dollar, and WP did a very nice job striking the coins. The mint just needs to lift household limits. I think I've said that before. image )
