Are More of Us here Over 40 or Under?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,776 ✭✭✭✭✭
Is there a shift in the average collectors age these days? Are there more of us here on these forums who are 40 or over or 39 and under?

Just my random curiosity getting the best of me.

I do think the 'graying' of the coin collector that we've all read about in numerous posts/articles/etc. is a bit of a concern, but might be a tad overblown. I think there are many of us that are, what I would consider, very serious collectors that are south of 40 (even if not by much image )...you just might not see us at as many shows as we would like due to our current life stage (namely due to job demands and young kids). No one can predict the future obviously, but I don't think the sky is falling.

I was coin collecting as a teenager in the mid 1960's and belonged to a fairly large coin club at the time. The demographics of coin collectors hasn't changed much since then. It has always been mostly a hobby for older white males. I'm glad to see there are a few more minority and female collectors entering the hobby.

Will be 38 in two months. Wow. I used to think that was old......really old. I started thinking about when I was 19 (which seemed like it was just a couple years ago), now I'm DOUBLE that!

I started collecting when I was about 26.

I'm 57 and only started seriously collecting in my late 30's. Many people will read into this poll, and general hobby demographics, that the hobby is dying because only 25% are under 40. I don't believe that to be true. I think there are a great many collectors like me who dabbled in coins since being a kid but only became serious at an older age.

This is the only sport where the older person can beat me worse than the energy of a younger person ever could.
That is, until they're under 13 …. then I give in and for me and many; that's the good nature of the beast.

It's still a great sport for young and old alike.

    Over 40...over 50...over 60.

Funny, when going to shows I only seem to see people either over the age of 50 or under the age of 15. Of course, when I attended my first coin show back in 1963 I only saw people who were over the age of 50 or under the age of 15. The same thing when I was 20...when I was 30...when I was 40.

And the conversation at ALL of them was about how coin collecting was going the way of the dodo bird because aging collectors weren't being replaced by younger ones.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

Over 40 by just a couple of years. Collected as a kid, dabbled a bit in my twenties and got a bit more serious (meaning spending real money) in my thirties.
