Looks like from the little prings that it is in a rattler. The coin itself has been processed and does not retain it's original surfaces. Id guess AU50 is the grade on the holder. The details are stronger than this but the surfaces really hold it back like 90% of the other early gold.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Agree but think they graded it XF40 when they put it in the rattler.
RE: that is amazing. the dentils were cut around the 5 on the rev?
BD-1 1811 Tall 5; R3+ From Bass Danreuther... Shares reverse A with 1810 BD-1 "tall 5 over three shortened dentils (not fat and squat, as the other large 5 used in 1810, key) with feather tip well past flag."
I don't believe it is graded details or "damaged" sitting in a Rattler.
Interesting to see this coin pop up. I had the coin in hand from Joel Perlin, via ebay, and passed. I must say I am VERY surprised that it got a CAC sticker. I can see why JA could green sticker it saying it was acceptable for an XF45, but Joel, at least at the time, was asking AU money for it.
The coin has very nice details, but is blatantly unoriginal. The luster is pretty decent but the skin of the coin just wasn't there, at least for me.
I paid the same money for the coin below. A little less meat, but great skin.
So, Broadstruck, golden, steveben, CoinJunkie and I, were the only ones giving it a solid XF 45, without any maybes. I have had one of these Capped Bust $5 on my want list now for about ten years.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

You should have pulled the trigger back then when XF/AU's where today's VF money.
Then again I've missed the boat on a lot of stuff too I wont pay up for today

I sent you a PM but would highly advise you to stay away from this coin as well as the seller. Unless I can cherry pick them, I will never do business with this company in the future. They thought I was a newbie and looked to take advantage in my estimation.
The sticker got there after I saw it last....and it added a grand to the price. I passed at over 1000 less.
Additionally, they made me pay for shipping both ways...just to have the "privilege" of a return. When I told them that their pictures and description of the coin was deceptive and that they should pay for shipping one way, they told me that they would not and that I was lucky...normally they charge a "restocking fee".
Well after guessing the grade and really glancing at the photo I knew the white balance was off but never expected it to as bright as a ex jewellery piece.
If you look at the Sales Link not only is the white balance off on the slab shots but the majorly juiced the black template large obverse/reverse shots to make them seem orange.

<< <i>Looks 53'ish to me, but luster could boost it 55. >>
Any traces of remaining luster would just be seen within the protected areas which is pretty typical of most early circ gold seen.

The coin is Green CAC
<< <i>Hint 1 of 2 that may (or may not) help you.
The coin is Green CAC >>
Nope not sure how a sticker on the slab is to help guessing the grade from a photo?
a side-by-side of its silver counterpart would be cool. the drapery and clasp are insanely strong by comparison.
i dont recall seeing the metal flow lines on gold from the legend to the dentils. metal content must have been the delineation.
i'll say 50 as holdered and if not repaired, probably a gold sticker and/or upgrade in the future.

It is in a rattler....if you haven't figured that out already.
For consideration is some weakness/wear in the eagle's neck feathers...

<< <i>Yep about the details grade they just bagged them then. >>
Plus CAC wouldn't have stickered it.
I'll guess 45.

Okay...TIME..... I call TIME! That is entirely too much numismatistimania.
Turn in your loupe! STAT!
now...53
I grade the obverse as a 53 and the reverse as a 50......so 51.5????

Not so much a solid 45 as a net 45.
