Once touted as an extreme rarity in the 1960s with only "25 to 30 extant and perhaps less," the 1854-D Type I gold dollar is still tough coin. The estimates to range from 80 (Coin Facts) to 100 to 125 (Doug Winter). Compare that to the rarity of the key dates for most series like the 1909-S-VDB cent and 1916-D Mercury Dime (thousands known), this coin can be called
If you look at the Red Book listings for the 1803 Small Date half dime, you might think it is only slightly rarer than the 1803 Large Date coin. That is not the case. The total estimated population is in the 25 to 30 ranage, which makes it of equal rarity to the 1802 half dime. Of course the 1803 Small Date is a die variety as opposed to the 1802, which is a date. That makes for a HUGE price difference. Still the coin is rare, and if you are looking to complete a Red Book set of these coins, this one will give you more trouble that you might think.

I also have an 1803 half dime unusual coin.
The obverse seems Fine to Very Fine to my eye, while the reverse is struggling to be Good. The surfaces are naturally toned, and I see no surface problems. The rims are lightly rolled, creating a protective measure that helped preserve the condition.

The wear on that 1803 half dime is strange. I'm guessing that the planchet upon which coin sits has a convex/concave shape with obverse sitting at the bottom of the well. It was some sort of post mint damage. The obverse grades a solid, no question VF. The reverse ... I suppose you would say is the opposite of the average About Good with center weak and lettering strong.
These tiny coins were very prone to damage and odd wear like this. It's one of the reasons why it is so hard to find them in clean, straight grades like VG and Fine.

Is there a difference between rare coins and key dates? I think one difference has to do with the availability of the coin and at what price. That the collector of rare coins is about as rare as the coin itself. And there is the length of time a collector needs to search for a coin may prove it's a rare date. Whereas a key date is readily available and in many grades as long as the collector has the funds. The highest grade of key dates may push a coin in the rarity bracket if the search is long and dubious if that's the correct word. Seeking out rare dates can become doubtful and hopeless. Seeking out problem free coins is not easy either.
I guess this is off topic somewhat but I see two kinds of coins posting for this thread.
Oh, almost forgot, just about every Jefferson nickel with an EDS strike from 1938 to 1970 are key dates........most are extremely rare. The few I have can be seen on my website. There's nothing greater than a coin with a most powerful strike and if you can find them in high grade......more power to you!

It's not high grade, but the 1796-7 half dollar is the #1 type set coin for the non gold series.

Within the Barber Half series the 1901 branch mint issues from San Fran and New Orleans are particularly rare in higher mint state grades. These are a couple of memorable pieces, and two of my favs.
