I hate to admit this but I am skipping the Summer Baltimore show

I recall many years ago not feeling safe walking the inner harbor at these shows. Since then so much has changed. The city felt safe and I was not a concerned about walking at nights.
What has happened now is awful and so many people like the great Ray Lewis are so angry at what has happened.
The truth is this has become a great show. For the LSCC it is a amazing meeting place. The concern I have to have is how edge is this city going to be on in early July? I wanted to take my kids to a show and planned to make this their first ever show but I am not sure I feel safe. This will of course pass but I am not sure it will not be a city on edge and is it worth the risk 10 weeks away?
Maybe I am crazy but I am really thinking I may just sit this one out.

it'll be ok
The cops havent let that food safety convention shut down.
Do I have to book a room to prove it?
The people I have met who live there are great people. Nice, pleasant and good people. It is so unfair what a few people are doing to this fine city.

<< <i>Two and a half months from now you won't even be able to tell anything happened. The violence of the rioters is aimed at the police, not random strangers. I think it's a bit much to be so worried.

There you go......just stay way from the police and you'll be fine.

I agree. But wait to book your hotel to be sure it's still standing when you need it.

But hotel booking rates might be really cheap right now?
I'm not dismissing those fears, or suggesting that any reason anyone has not to go somewhere is invalid, but things change and you might have a totally different perspective in a few weeks, or possibly a more compelling reason not to go somewhere else.

<< <i>One might be able to stay free in a protester's tent and smoke sensible marijuana if this thing carries into July. >>
That would have been a few years ago when then 1%ers had a camp nearby.
<< <i>There was a time last year when people were not going to go to shows due to fears of Ebola.

Oh...you haven't heard?...............The Main Stream Media has put a pox on the Ebola epidemic.
'scuse the pun, coin friends .

<< <i>I'll be there. The worst thing that could happen is they lock up the convention center and make us trade coins all night >>
Some of the older dealers can relate. Years ago, the Baltimore show got snowed-in and the dealers traded amongst themselves as there was no public attendance. Some still feel it was one of the best shows ever.
<< <i>The poor management of the entire affair by the city makes one question their ability to manage anything. For me, that is enough to cross Baltimore off the list permanently. Thoroughly disgusted by the authorities and the residents. Cheers, RickO >>

if history is any indicator, it is not a good idea to get Ray Lewis angry

Ray Lewis is the greatest player to come from The Canes except for maybe Mike Irvin. He is a great guy and his you tube video was moving to say the least. I posted in on my facebook page.

but Michael Irvin didn't murder someone
<< <i>...the great Ray Lewis... >>
Since when has a guy that paid people to take the fall for a murder rap become a "great" person?
Or, to mix metaphors a bit, you're probably better off aboard a steamboat where the boiler has already exploded and been fixed than one that's been hissing and clanking but hasn't blown yet.
<< <i>Too many other options to visit and shop in the USA, to patronize a town like Baltimore where the Mayor and Police Chief are incompetent - such poor leadership doesn't make me feel safe in Baltimore. People who burn down their own neighbors CVS and senior-citizen housing just to send a message...I just infer a very different message than perhaps they intended. >>

<< <i>Well there u have it... No one showed up for the Preakness today in Baltimore ... >>
The Preakness was not in the downtown area where the rioting took place.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
The reason that awful situation made the news is that it is so unusual. That isn't a daily event.
Baltimore is a great city to visit. Terrific restaurants, great, easy to get to by car or by air, reasonably priced hotels right near the convention center, beautiful waterfront; major sports venues right there.
Oh -- and those 3 shows are among the top 5 coin shows in the nation each year.
I was at the Red Sox Orioles game Saturday, April 25th, two days before the large riot. The protests had begun when I purchased my tickets, and I certainly thought about safety. I compared protest locations and planned march routes to the stadium, and decided best to park to the south. While at the game, some trouble began directly outside the stadium with police cars getting smashed. They announced in the 8th inning the mayor and police chief had directed that fans not leave the stadium due to an on-going public safety issue..... Despite the trouble outside, those in the park of all races were calm and reasonable... In the 9th inning they announced we could leave.
Fast forward 3 weeks. Last night I was in Baltimore, and all was calm.
I think the trouble arose from a core of instigators combined with a lot of folks who get caught up in the mentality that it is OK to loot and throw things at the police. I would even think that the bulk of the most bad stuff like setting fires and being the first to break into a business were probably done by a very small percentage of all the people rioting, and an even smaller percentage of the total protesting population.
For a non-violent arrest, and the guy ends up dead, something is not right. Hopefully the system can conduct a fair investigation and determine the cause, and everyone will accept the results.
All that said, I think any city could face a sudden un-expect violent turn, and Baltimore's primary increased risk for summer is that some results that are not welcome get released.
That's what it looks like.
So, if I were planning to go, I would change my plans. The likelihood of anything happening is very slim, to none. However, I would vote with my $$$ and not go back there until things were straightened out.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Let's hope that the local officials get this thing under control. If they don't the consequences will be dire for the whole city. The Federal Government is not the answer. It is too big and too poorly run to micromanage local issues. Too many Federal officials have politicized the issue of police misconduct rather than taking constructive steps to deal with the small number of officers who step over the line.
Let me put it this way. My wife has wanted to go to the Baltimore Zoo for years during the times that she has gone with me to the Baltimore coin show. People have told her repeatedly to stay out of that area because it's not safe. When you have a resource that is run by the city which is not safe for tourists to use, you have a crime problem. Blaming the police for all of the community problems and forcing them to look behind their backs every time they make a legitimate arrest, because of some grandstanding politician or race hustler, is not a solution to the problem.
I have advocated that collectors need to go the Baltimore show support to the city. I still believe that, but if the police are going to have their hands tied and the city is not safe, that is another matter.
Another officer shot last night, this time in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
<< <i>Crazy.... 18 folks shot this holiday weekend, 33 killed in Baltimore so far in the month of May. >>
Big deal. 18 shot over a weekend in Chicago would be a quiet weekend. (When I hear a "bang" at night when the windows are open, I no longer think, "fireworks".)
12 Dead, At Least 44 Injured in Memorial Day Weekend Shootings
As of 2 days ago, we had 30 murders in May, so we'll probably close out the months at over 40. Note this is just business as usual here in Chicago.
How many of you went to the Chicago show?
