<< <i>How many of you went to the Chicago show? >>
I didn't and I won't. Chicago has really gotten a really bad reputation. Things can be turned around. New York City was in tough shape years ago before Ruddy Giuliani turned it around more than a decade ago. There are places in every city where you are not safe, and one should avoid those areas. The trouble gets intolerable when WHOLE CITY is not safe.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Big deal. 18 shot over a weekend in Chicago would be a quiet weekend. (When I hear a "bang" at night when the windows are open, I no longer think, "fireworks".)
<< <i>I'm going to the July Baltimore for the first time and looking forward to it. >>
You'll have a great time there, Charmy. It is my favorite city on the coin show "circuit". Great restaurants at all price points, lots of things to do and see in walking distance, great hotel choices at all price points (that you can often get cheaper by gambling on Priceline.com) and the Baltimore shows (even the Summer one) are always decent to excellent.

Thank you Dave, but I should have been a little more clear - I've been attending the March and November Baltimore shows for years, I've just never tried the summer show. I too love the wonderful restaurants in Baltimore - but I'm also happy they opened up a new casino just a couple miles from the convention center! ;-)
I hope I'm wrong but I fear the only significant business action at this show will be dealer to dealer. Think about it from the standpoint of a would-be show attendee. Given the unrest, is going to a coin show in Baltimore going to be at the top of the list of a collector's preferred summer activities, particularly if any significant travel is involved to get there?
I was in Baltimore two weeks ago and if you're near the Convention Center, you won't even know there was trouble. I was two miles away on Liberty Street at the Mondawin Mall that was looted. Across the street was the burned out CVS. I also passed a burned out Wendy's. After I was done meeting with my client, I couldn't get back to the Inner Harbor area fast enough.
We associate the whole city with the riots where people almost destroyed their own neighborhood. It's a neighborhood you would not have visited anyway. Inner Harbor/Convention Center is the same as we remember. You might even get a better room rate if you decide to go at the last minute.

There's a large Firefighters' convention being held there at the same time. The local room rates are thru the roof as the firefighters have locked rates at 9 hotels surrounding the convention center.
Of note: Much of the initial rioting took place right beside the convention center.
<< <i>As long as you ain't got a camera those folks dont wanna see you. Being scared of them types = they win. Get you a good 45APC or 2 and go to the show. >>
What's a 45APC? Unless you have a concealed carry permit it would be illegal to carry a gun.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
The city has been a cesspool for decades buttressed up by the Inner Harbor area. I don't even trust parking in the Hyatt lot adjacent to the Convention Center.
Many years of going into Baltimore regularly have led me to conclude it is the rudest city in the country and the closest city we have to "The Hunger Games."
The people are generally nasty and a lot more can be done regarding security (private and public) around the Convention Center throughout every coin show. Baltimore however won't do it. It's history of mayors who are incapable of leadership is documented in poor decisions such as not adding a public police display around the Convention Center area.
<< <i> What has happened now is awful and so many people like the great Ray Lewis are so angry at what has happened.
>>
if history is any indicator, it is not a good idea to get Ray Lewis angry >>
Ray Lewis is the greatest player to come from The Canes except for maybe Mike Irvin. He is a great guy and his you tube video was moving to say the least. I posted in on my facebook page. >>
Lewis turned against his crew a decade ago and turned state's witness or he'd be the reincarnation of O.J., in my opinion. Don't fall for his "great guy" persona. You'd be surprised how many Marylanders and Metro D.C. residents have little to no use for him.

Well said, and I completely agree with you.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
There are a number of upcoming shows that you can attend if you might be uncomfortable at the Baltimore show. But, there may be also be some great deals to be had in Baltimore if many are not comfortable there.
I commonly drove from Pennsylvania each year to spend one day at the Summer Baltimore show.
A Police Union representative reports the criminals feel empowered. Police reportedly are more fearful of being prosecuted for doing their jobs than being shot in the line of duty.
After pondering if the risk was worth the reward I decided to skip Baltimore this summer.
Considering the uptick in violence, the possibility of another "protest" breaking out for any number of reasons, the decrease in active policing, and the fact that all the bad news is already unquestionably going to keep a number of collectors and some dealers away makes me really question how good the show will be and if it's worth the risks, so I've cancelled my table. I may be kicking myself for backing out of it, but I don't see the risk/reward being worth it. I love the Baltimore show, and it's one of my favorite coin shows, but this particular one at this particular point in time is problematic.
I wasn't planning on going, anyway, but the idea of choosing to show up to a publicized convention involving cash and valuables in a location with emboldened criminals, 6 police officers removed from the force, and the rest neutered by the idiots in charge...

I think that the morons in Balto would rather prosecute an honest citizen carrying w/o a CCW then an armed robber. If u had to use the gun for totally legit self defense you'd likely get more time than the perp (if he lived - really).

Have any National dealers pulled out of this show yet?

We went to the Baltimore Museum of Industry last night for fireworks.
We drove around the city quite a bit before getting there.
There were large crowds, busy streets and lots of folks having a great time. There was not so much as the slightest hint of any trouble. It was 100% business as usual.
If I were not going to be out of town I would absolutely attend the show. I don't believe that there will be any issues out of the ordinary - save for some possibly great deals w/lower attendance.
I think that by the next show following the summer that all will be back to normal attendance wise.

12 Dead, At Least 44 Injured in Memorial Day Weekend Shootings
As of 2 days ago, we had 30 murders in May, so we'll probably close out the months at over 40. Note this is just business as usual here in Chicago.

I agree with dbldie55 - what show was in Chicago?
Been to shows in Rosemont and Schaumburg and never had a problem there.

Chicago's population. 5x larger ... Baltimore is 1/13th New York's pop.. Chicago coin shows happen outside of City of Chicago
Most all the murders , shootings in Chicago ,happen in South and West sides.. with unpublicized crimes increasing in the Mag Mile tourist areas
Baltimore's murders hit a 16 year high with the murders spread over most of city
Just be extra careful... to be safe

Balty is a great place and the shows are great, behind Fun and ANA I don't think any are better shows.
My only real concern is there is an added risk in going to this show. In July it will be better or worse. We shall see.
