I personally like the ms66 better. The 65+ is nice but the picture is juiced up, so unless I saw it in person first, I'd be afraid the coin does not look like the picture. Additionally, I am not a big fan of toned cents. I prefer them natural as minted.

I prefer the even color of the 66.

Despite the blessed originality, I do not like the color of the 65+.

The 66 is no-risk. Very genuine appearance. Exactly what a copper/nickel IHC should look like.

I'd like to see the 65+ in hand. Or would want a return privilege. The green bean is reassuring so I'd choose this one.

The 66 in the older gasket holder. Simply solid.

The 65+ with bean is a hassle to value. Colored copper in recent slabs could change in holder, plus values, bean changes things....just seems too worked with. Cool, nun the less but if they were both sitting there to chose from I'd go with the 66, which is new for me as I'm loaded with color in my collection. It's pluses, beans and edge views I'm not into.

#2. MS65+ stickered.

Based on the $1880 prices realized for each coin I'd take the MS65+. The MS66 has "no color" and doesn't appear solid for the grade as it fetched much less than price guide and has no sticker. At least we know the 65+ was stickerable. And it has a look that is very appealing and eye catching. It could be just as stickerable in a 66 holder.

Based on info presented as of today I pick the MS65+ at an 80% premium to MS65 money. It's a pretty wide gap between MS65 to MS66 money ($1,000 to $2600). Both of these coins fell into the middle of that range. One is apparently lower end 66 and the higher very high end 65. I'll take the coin with a chance of potential. You could argue that both of these coins aren't great buys for various reasons. Considering that a solid MS66 with Eagle Eye cert fetched $3290 in that same FUN auction, the killer looking MS65+ at half that price is reasonable. This MS66 at half the price of the better MS66 seems wanting in a market where solid to high end coins rule. That suggests one is an all there MS66 and the other probably isn't. The cheaper MS66 surfaces look much more sanitized/uniform than the Eagle Eye coin which has some variable toning and a few light specks. The Eagle Eye coin has several facial marks that the other coin doesn't. My gut feel says the surfaces on the $1800 MS66 aren't quite right 100% original though market acceptable. 3 coins with distinctly different looks.

Well 1st I would look very close at the date's on both them, Then I would look at the rev and if I don't see what I'm looking for but going to buy one of them any way I'll take the MS66 it's a nicer coin. That's the picker in me ~Type2.

The 65+ toner caught my eye when I was looking through the online catalog. If I recall correctly, when I checked the HA auction archive this was its third trip to the auction block over the past several years. While it is a striking looking coin, I think many mainstream IHC collectors would be leery of the unusual toning and also would not find it to be a good fit with the look of the other coins in their set. I was tempted, but kept thinking that MS coins just don't come like that.

I prefer the 66. It's a respectful natural clean looking coin, while the 65+ looks like it came back home from a wild night out partying.

1) No disrespect to CAC, but I'd think a photoseal trumps a sticker, because I believe Rick Snow has seen more high grade Flyers, CN and IHCs than CAC personnel.
2) Ideally, I, and someone I know and trust who has more knowledge than I do must personally view any wildly colorful or unusually toned coin before considering buying it. I don't care what's on the plastic or what sticker it has. Sometimes, I settle for the knowledgeable individual. Last October, for example, I purchased an unusually toned Liberty Nickel - I never have seen one like this - because it was viewed by someone with far more knowledge than I. I would not have purchased the coin otherwise.
3) You need to be careful paying a strong premium for anything where the chance for an upgrade is unlikely at best. Ie., a Liberty Nickel in MS 66, a Capped Bust Half in MS 64, s Capped Bust Dime in MS 64, and I get the impression an IHC or CN coin in MS 66 falls into this category. You don't want to own the most expensive house on the block, so to speak.

A lot of coin sold for big $$$ in that year 2008 was the top of the market for many coins.

Actually, things were already falling apart in early Dec 2008 when that coin was auctioned. The FUN show only a month later was a disaster with many coins fetching 30-40% off their summer 2008 peaks. The real tipping point for the coin market was around the fall 2008 Long Beach show. After that things started rolling down hill quick. Had this toner 1863 been sold in the first half of 2008 it might have fetched a lot more than $5400. Still, that price is 3X what the PCGS MS66 in this post just fetched. If sold today a price similar or more vs. the Eagle Eye MS66 above ($3300) wouldn't surprise me. And it also wouldn't surprise me if the NGC MS66* toner sold for $2600K or less if it couldn't sticker or buyers couldn't get past the holder. NGC holder bias is far worse today than in Dec 2008 and it has affected (and infected) even the nice coins.

I think it is interesting that the MS66 sold for lower than recent sales by a good bit, while the 65+ with color sold for more than recent 65+ sales from the Heritage data base. Again, there is nothing like seeing the coin in hand as pictures often obscure important aspects that can be seen better under a good light while rotating the coin.

And to answer the question, I like the 65+ coin better, but it is just a color preference. IHCs are NOT my series, so I have little knowledge other than what my eye likes.

I would go with the MS-66. That is how an almost perfectly preserved 150+ year old copper nickel coin should look because that's how it looked when it left the dies.

The 66 looks OK, but I don't like the flat strike on the feather tips. Not for a 66.

The 65+ looks fully struck and an early die state at that! The toning is interesting, but might be the result of secondary toning after the coin was dipped.

I would prefer the 65+ if it was priced around $1,000. The 66 is a trap at any price over $1800

Have to agree with Lakes, never seen PCGS grade a coppernickel like this.

Personally like the clean CN look of #1.
