SALES HALTED IN ROSEMONT FOR NEW GOLD KENNEDY COINS
(Rosemont, Illinois) -- The United States Mint and the American Numismatic Association Board of Governors have jointly announced that sales have been suspended for the John F. Kennedy gold proof half dollars at the World's Fair of MoneySM in Rosemont, Illinois after today, August 7, 2014.
Earlier today, the Mint announced it had suspended sales at its three retail locations in Philadelphia, Denver and Washington, D.C.
In its earlier sales suspension statement the Mint explained: "The Mint made this decision to ensure the safety of those wanting to purchase the coin and the safety of its own employees."
Hundreds of people have lined up outside the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont each night since Monday to purchase the new gold coins that have a dual date, 1964-2014, to
commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half dollars. Sales of the gold coins at the World's Fair of Money were limited to only 500 coins per day, and only one per customer.
Customers interested in purchasing the gold Kennedy half dollar proof coins are encouraged to visit the Mint’s website (www.usmint.gov) or contact the call center (1-800-USA-MINT), where they can purchase up to five coins per household.
The United States Mint will continue offering other Mint products for sale at the World's Fair of Money that is open to the public and continues as scheduled through Saturday afternoon, August 9.
Admission to the show on Saturday, August 9, will be free for Free Appraisal Day when the public is invited to bring in their old coins and paper money for complimentary, expert educational appraisals by American Numismatic Association members. Fully agree.
I'm ok with them selling products that have been out for awhile, but they should NEVER be selling new/hot items like that.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

They're greatly enriching others while SPENDING more money for staff/security but still charging the same amount as if it were online........?

I agree too. They were selling HOF clads at Long Beach and I still hadn't received all 3 clad coins ordered first day.
I know that's small potatoes to what's been happening the last few days. That's been a powder keg.

but, could they charge a different amount in person? (it's physically possible, but could the mint justify it?)
for those missing the news.... watch tonight or online for the sasquatch in the bear suit (squatchoflage) walking through peoples' yards. I think this is why no one has really seen sasquatch.

After some soul-searching, I've come to the conclusion that all my angst over this is due to jealousy. If I had been in line first on the first day, or been one of the first 500 either the first, second, third or fourth day — or all four days — I would have said that selling these at the ANA show was the greatest idea anybody ever had.

It's about time they took their heads out of their butts and actually started practicing "fair and equal access". Now if their system would recognize us "West Coast" folks and start providing "fari and equal" access, I'd be a happy camper!

A response I would expect from a coin dealer that travels to all the shows anyway.
I had honestly planned on attending this show, even though I rarely travel outside California for coin shows, as soon as the mint announced they would be selling them.
Then the mint announced a limited amount that would be sold.
Then the mint announced that only 500 per day would be sold AND tickets would be given out at some unknown location to be announced.
Then the mint announce that everybody knew the location.
Then the mint announced that instead of being able to purchase 2 coins, folks with a ticket could only purchase 1 coin.
It was well before most of these announcements that I decided it simply would not be profitable to attend the show with $500 RT Airfare and $100 per night hotel in addition to show purchases and food.
Sure, I could have deducted my losses but the odds, very QUICKLY, became stacked against me.
So, for the crowd that says "If they want them bad enough they would have made the trip." I say "Bite me!"

My father was in the line last night from around 8pm to 1pm today and he sold his coin for $2500, so he made $1260 in 17 hours.
$74.11 per hour is pretty good hourly rate in my book. If you make more than that on your regular day you are lucky SOTB.
I'm glad that US Mint makes sales like this from time to time and I wish them good luck in the future. We need more sales like 2011 ASE and 2014 Kennedy.
Anyway I had 3 hours to run the floor and bought 2 important coins for my collection, both from Karl Stephens (thanks!) (I will not post them here as they are world coins..)

I agree with you.
The people that got coins were the ones that got in line for them and staying in line up to 16 hours.
I'd say they deserved them.
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
No one saw this coming but shame on the dealers for bring people in off the street to make a buck.
I have a table directly across from the mint to try and buy coins but seller didn't want be near the action.
After a frustrating 2 days the women who sat at my table and refused to leave while eating her pizza was just too much. I have a lot of pictures of people including one dealer holding a stack of cash to buy these coins.
I left the table and packed my things up because I did not feel safe at all and I don't think I was.
The ANA was very responsive at every level but in the end I think the volume of people was too much for anyone to handle.
I doubt this will ever happen again and hope tomorrow will br fun.

Same story from the mainstream media.
So basically, this is now even better for those dealers that abused the system (POPS reduced by 1,000), one of which is at the show right by the mint counter, and based on my observations actually orchestrated a war room type plan to buy hundreds and hundreds of these sets daily. This dealer had pockets of 6-10 people positioned throughout the lines of 500+. They had guys walking up and down in the streets counting to know exactly how many sets they had locked up at any given time and knew their position. If and when they had a need for more, they would simply add to their positioned groups with impunity...groups of 6 became 10, etc. Missing Credentials, no problem they bought hundreds and they were openly passed around in unlimited quantities, just grab a pen and make sure the person knows what to do and how to spell their names. Now, if 1 person cut the line they'd get practically beat down...dozens of preppy boys being shifted in, nobody said anything. Day 1 I honestly thought these people worked for the event. By day 2, I had it all figured out when I saw the same people buying behind the curtain as well.
Anyways, quite the operation they had going.
I was going to make the trip. But the moving shell game, the over the top greed (hiring tons of people to wait and buy for you) and general insanity led me to believe I couldn't get a fair shot at one. Make a system where I don't have to sleep in line...I'll be happy to make the trip.

The fault really lies with the incompetent US MINT and ANA Show managers.... remember how Jay Sherlock of the ANA ,here on this forum said everything was under control ,,that there would be no over night camping in line and on ...this Show fiasco is theirs
