    Any idea which denomination? Southern gold is tough to find nice but there are a few well versed folks on the forum who can offer advice.

    Denom doesn't matter per say. Most half a quarter eagles seem to come in the xf range. If I found one around the 15 20 range I wouldn't mind just because of the affordability. I'm not specific on any year either but straight grade is a must

    I'd like to give you a one-coin answer, but that's just not how I work. Like most of us, I'm actively pursuing a lot of coins, but when I look at a dealer's inventory or in other venues, I look for opportunities...to buy a great coin at a price I like and can afford. So this morning my #1 might be a gold Ducat; this afternoon my #1 might be a Pillar Dollar; and tonight my #1 might be a 55 DDO Lincoln. It depends on what I find when I go searching.

    To publicly reveal what is highest on my want list, especially this close to the summer ANA, might prove to be counter-productive. However, there are two half dimes which are high on my want list for which there may not be too much competition.

    For the year 1858-O, there are two (2) distinctly different die marriages on which the reverse dies deteriorated to the point where they eventually resulted in full cuds. These are the V3 and V6. On the V3, the cud extends from K4:30 - K6:30, or from CA of AMERICA to the right stem and ribbon. For the V6, which was unknown to Valentine, the reverse cud is wider than on the V3, and extends from K4:30 - K7:30, or from A3 to the left stem. Suffice it to say I would be interested in any 1858-O half dime with a cud, the later the die state the better.

    Business strike 1869-P 25C in XF40 - MS64 range...wide open range depending on the right coin.

    But with a realistic total Pop of around 50 coins, and I already own one (a lower grade VG10), I might be looking a while/need to be opportunistic. There is a MS66 coming up for sale at Heritage later this year but I will not even bid as this coin's price will probably be more than my entire 1869 set, and I know where there is another 64 in an NGC holder but the coin is 2x the price it should be and is really like a 62/63 on top of that...

    For years it was the 1884 and 1885 three cent pieces in business strike. They have gotten ridiculously expensive and one of them would cost more that what I have in the entire set. So...I took them off my want-list and sleep better.

    I just acquired my #1 coin (and white whale by a wide margin) a few weeks ago and it feels absolutely fantastic. I have a handful of coins coming up which I'm interested in but nothing anywhere near as significant.

    This is also how I work in general. The one coin I'm prepared to spend significant $$$ on should the right one
    come along is my avatar coin. Of course, that's been the case for years. Many examples have had issues or I
    haven't liked the toning in particular.

    I have been looking for two specific type coins, one of them for eleven years, the other for five years. One in MS 65, the other in AU 50 - AU 55. To be candid, I doubt I'll find either of them.

    This coin is graded AU-55, but it I could find a piece graded EF-45 that didn't look like something the cat drug in, I'd be very interested. The best one that has been offered to me had smooth surfaces, but it was so toned it looked like a piece of copper. image

    Second on the list is an 1875-P MS-64 or 65 Twenty Cent Piece that has not been dipped or looks like it has not been dipped, at least not very much. image Even the dipped out ones are in short supply.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
