Sub-100 Population Coins...

I tried this in an earlier post but didn't exactly get the response that I was looking for. Many folks posted condition rarities, varieties, or infrequently graded World coins. All nice coins for sure but not what I was after.

So let's try again...
Post a Redbook non-variety US mint issued non-proof coin that you own or once owned with less than 100 known in all grades using the PCGS Coinfacts estimated populations as the guide. Looking for absolute rarity here, tough to find, even tougher to find nice coins with only a few in existence in all grades. .

1842 $2.5 P45 CAC, Pop 55

1860 $2.5 Old Reverse P58 CAC, Pop 50

1842 $5 Large Date Large Letters, P53 CAC, Pop 47

1842-O $5 P40 CAC ex. Littlejohn, Pop 60

1846 $5 P55 Gold CAC, Pop 50

1847-O $5 P35 CAC, Pop 50

1859 $5 P55 CAC, Pop 75

1859-S $5 P53 CAC, Pop 55

1860-S $5 P45 CAC, Pop 50

I think I understood this thread the first time, but I didn't post anything after the thread got all confused. Since I have similar collecting interests as the OP- the really rare stuff with less than 100 known in all grades- I will enjoy watching this thread. Population estimates are my own conjectures, as I don't subscribe to Coinfacts.

1873-CC Quarter Dollar- 50 to 75 pieces known in all grades. (Uncertified)

1797 13 Stars Half Dime- less than 50 pieces known in all grades. (Uncertified)

1860 Stars Obverse transitional pattern half dime- 100 minted. PCGS MS63.

1803 "small 8"half dime. 25 known according to PCGS Pop. report. Yeah, it's badly scratched, but there are only about 25 of them left!

1822 25/50C Bust quarter. Pop. report says nothing about surviving pops., but it has to be well under 100.

I know some of these coins I'm posting are so ugly that they're going to make people puke, but when you get into these <100 known issues, you've got to take what you can get or afford. Many collectors consider the 1870-CC, 1871-CC, and 1873-CC quarters non-collectible and just don't bother to pursue them. Nice PCGS VF examples would probably cost you $75,000 for all three issues. I got these two at WalMart under the Rollback sign due to some minor issues.

By that, I mean they are "minor" coins with major issues.

This one just makes the cut, Coinfacts estimates the surviving population as 100 (of 640 minted).

The 1840-D quarter eagle has an estimated CoinFacts population of 65 in all grades, with high grade examples being very rare. Most 1840-D quarter eagles were struck from severely cracked dies. Attractive examples of this issue are very hard to find.

This example is from the James A. Stack collection (not related to the well-known coin firm of the same name).

When you say "1857-S," most think now-common shipwreck date. However, much rarer than its flashy $20 counterpart, the 1857-S $10 still has a survival estimate of only 100.

The 1860 $2.50 Old Reverse does not show up often and certainly not often in the same thread.

It's possible that the 70-cc and 71-cc quarters have surviving pops <100 specimens. But, I seriously doubt the more common 73cc arrows quarter is in that league.
The 72-s quarter might also be in the under 100 club. It's a toss up though.

The 1874-cc dime is certainly <100 pop and is probably the rarest of all 4 of these dates. I've owned 3 of these 4. I've never used CoinFacts but I would rate it's accuracy on how
it rates these 4 dates.

Here's an 1855-D quarter eagle, with a mintage of 1,123 and a CoinFacts estimate of 60 coins in all grades. This is a good example of a rare date, lower grade piece (that got me really excited when I found it at the 2003 ANA in Baltimore). I thought that the coin was "perfect for the grade," with original surfaces and honest wear (a "Gem Fine," if you will). I found the piece, raw, at the ANA and had it graded at the show by our host. This situation is exactly why I don't even try to be a "Condition Snob." It is still one of my favorite Dahlonega pieces.

Nothing wrong with the overdate considering the 1808/7 is recognized in the Redbook as a distinct issue. The die variety is what makes the coin a sub-pop 100 coin. Regardless it's a cool coin and I'm glad you posted it. Very cool.

I think folks would agree that the more strict definition has brought out some fantastic coins from the forum members here.
