this is when i know that blocking was the BEST decision
here is a message I received after blocking an ebayer that offered $10 on a coin I had priced at $200. he offered, I declined and blocked, then he sent this: "You are a Jerk for blocking me for a low offer for your overpriced coin that you will NEVER SELL AT THAT PRICE!!! I am a Great fast paying buyer that you lost as a customer I will tell all my e-bay friends about you as well. They will not buy from you either!!!! I bid $10.00 because the coin may be worth $20-30.00 and wanted to show you that you were overpricing your coin! If you cannot accept constructive criticism then you will Fail as a seller! YOU SUCK!!!" anyone interested in his ebay ID ?
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything

Well Congratulations are in order. You won the " YOU SUCK " award
Another reason I don't put make an offer on auctions.
<< <i>Set a minimum offer you will consider and you won't have to deal with low ball offers. They will be immediately declined. >>
Only way to roll. I have listings with 20 or so offers and all have been automatically declined for being to low. Saves alot of time and head aches.
<< <i>I don't understand why you blocked the person, instead of just declining. >>
I agree, unless he made many lowball offers on several coins. Certainly would not block on 1 offer.
<< <i>I don't understand why you blocked the person, instead of just declining. >>
I'm actually glad to know that I am not the only one who blocks those that make ridiculous offers...

I'd like to know the ID. Guys like that never buy anything and on the rare occasions when they do, they invariably find ways to make your life miserable. If others want "customers" like that, they can have 'em.
Anyone who posts a childish response like that after simply being blocked tends to prove my point.

offer that was accepted. My BIN price was $125 but I enabled any offer over $100 to be automatically
accepted and any offer under that declined. I just got $105. Worked out fine for me!

<< <i>I'm pretty much tired of the eBay nonsense and haven't sold on there for almost a year. I once had an eBay "buyer" tell me that my certified Seated dollar was only worth melt, lol. >>
Did you tell him that you would be happy to take his certified seated dollars for melt?

I have a coin listed for 489 with a best offer. Guy offers $4. I counter offer with 400. He buys.
Have you ever contemplated that a person enters the wrong amount and press submit too quickly? The best offer procedure is at best confusing, at worse I've made mistakes myself.
Sometimes people test you. It's a free market society. He can offer $2. You counter $190. Maybe he'll buy? Maybe he'll come back with $160?
But if you automatically ban the bidder you are 100% guaranteed not to make a sale.
Sorry...I just would not take that approach because you are guaranteeing you will make the person irate and guaranteeing that your decision to block the person was the best. You essentially created the reality you wanted.
I'd rather create the reality the of a PayPal payment and a USPS label printing

Simple, considerate communication seems to evade so many people. If the "buyer" wanted to communicate that he/she felt your coin was price too high ... why not just say so? Offering a very low price in the hopes the other seller will have a pricing epiphany is absurd and just inflames the conversation.

<< <i>I thought that a blocked member could no longer communicate to the blocking member through the eBay messaging system.
Unless eBay recently changed their policy, that used to be the case. Once blocked, you could not bid nor communicate via the eBay message system to the seller that blocked you.
btw, I do not block "low ball offer" bidders, I just ignore them or make a counteroffer.
<< <i>I don't understand why you blocked the person, instead of just declining. >>
Same here. You need these guys to get the 99c no reserve auctions going! The only time I would block someone is if I had a bad selling experience with him (i.e. returned a coin for "buyers remorse") or if someone else on the boards had a terrible experience.
<< <i>Funny, maybe I'm wired differently but I don't follow your logic...

Words of wisdom to agree with unless banning is a strategy to force communication for a sale. An extreme tactic nonetheless if it opens up an avenue to advertise............hey, whatever works to make a sale.
But in this instance, the OP ended up with a pissed off response and if either has a clientele following.......well, such a move could backfire.

why not just set a minimum acceptable price and avoid all the drama. surely you have better things to do with your time?

I think though that some sellers actually enjoy dealing with the low ballers, or inviting reactions, for whatever reason. Otherwise either set auto decline for offers too low or simply decline.

"ebaybuyer" has blocked so many bidders that the only ones left are those that only have 10 bucks to their name. He had no choice with that bid!
<< <i>I don't understand why you blocked the person, instead of just declining. >>
There are plenty of buyers on eBay, and eBay puts them on a high pedestal at the expense of the sellers. Blocking is one of the last tools sellers have there to keep the BS down. I'd block the guy also.
then check this box at the bottom of the page :
Don't allow blocked buyers to contact me. (Buyer won't see the "Contact Seller" button on your Q&A page.) Note: Buyers can still contact you about existing transactions, unless you add them to your blocked list.

If the example you have given is not just theoretical but actually took place, I think a conservative guess is that that outcome only happens about once in a million (or more) times. I have also blocked ridiculously low BO bidders on occasion, although lately I just use the "refuse offers lower than" option most of the time.

<< <i>Normally let eBay handle that kind of communication as I pre-set what will be accepted in my listings that have "Make Offer" enabled.

I bid on items from my 2yr old android that has a life of it's own and mistakes happen.
Just say no thanks. But I will admit I bocked a yoyo for a $20 offer on a $500 item. I too was annoyed. Thankfully that was the last I heard from him.
I would not have let it turn into a debate.
