In Memorium: Our Lost Members

Hi All,

When I use the search feature I always see icons that cause me to think about members gone now. Maybe this will work, maybe it won't, but let's try. I am in no way trying to be presumptuous or proprietary. I just want to remember these folks and what they gave to the boards; newer members can have a place to look and maybe learn a bit about who was here before.

I start this thread to honor and remember all those who we have lost. I am not good with "rules" so there aren't any - I suggest we keep it simple so we keep it going. Maybe the user ID, maybe an anecdote, link to an old thread or a word about what they did. No fighting please. Only good stuff here please. If you disagree with something just move along I guess. If you think it remotely might cause a problem - don't post it I guess. Just the good stuff. User monikers should suffice so they can be searched by newer members. This is sort of a reverse census I guess, but really a place this is a place to remember the great coin collectors of all stripes and sizes, or those with valuable information to share - and much more importantly, the many people we have known here. I owe some of these folks a lot, whether it was sharing knowledge or writing with wit and clarity - bet many of you do too. It is my suggestion we keep it one post per lost member if possible so we can include many. Eric
*********************************************************************************************************************************************

I am not running this show of course - I just had the idea and felt compelled. I think if we keep it all short, sweet and avoid any controversy we should be fine, repetition or not.

****************************************************

I'll start with...

Bear, aka Abe (11.20.11), a wise and brave gentleman with a kind heart and a great way with words. He lived his life and continued his collection while sharing his knowledge with grace to the last despite increasing difficulty. He had a stabilizing effect when some threads got a little heated, remember that? When newer readers see an old, well-written, seemingly simple post of double spaced words of value - that's likely the Wise Old Bear. Search his threads to see him in action. We can still learn from him - and he can continue to spread his knowledge with his posts.

So, raise a jelly donut for Bear.

Who would like add another member to this roll? If someone could please PM me a link for a beautiful "lost man formation" photo I will add it right here and remove this sentence.

Eric, aka BigE. What a genuine, helpful fellow. He treated the little guys the same as veterans. With friendliness, respect, and a cheerful manner.

I am glad he was a tree.

I think you might wind up with more than one post for some of the lost members because some were very impactful. That said, let me briefly mention IGWT; I presume others will chime in with more details.

I miss IGWT almost every time I look at the coin forum. I know I did not interact with him nearly as much as did others but whenever I did it was hugely enjoyable and often very enlightening. For those who remember the thread and the "secret" pm, the picture IGWT posted in this thread is absolutely hilarious. And his pictures of his shield nickels were stunning; for coins I thought rather pedestrian, his posts and pictures definitely switched my opinion about those nickels!

Chad Williford aka Silvereagle92 is another young that is dearly missed on this forum. Chad had a great sense of humor and was wise beyond his years.

Silvereagle92 was a great kid. I sold him several coins/sets and bought them back.

Monkapop from the Open Forum was a great guy. He had those little monkeys and they attacked him and his wife several times. The last time he took them to a sanctuary in Florida. He said they were not monkeys they were capuchins. image

Most here probably don't remember him, because he only collected world coins, but newbiecollector (Wayne Whatley) was a good guy.

Cameron was only 28; to lose his life at such a young age was a terrible tragedy for his family.

Considering the average age, poor health, sedintary lifestyle, poor diet, mental negativity and neuroticism of the typical coin person, it is no surprise people are dying off at a rapid rate. It'll get a lot worse in the next decade.

Such a nice, smart kid. That one was a tragedy and leaves you without words.

Very wise, very funny -- he could trash talk you but it felt like he was giving you a massage.

This....I really still can't believe it...I used to have lunch with the guy all of the time out here at the Long Beach show. Shiro, Greg Margulies and I used to rib him to no end about his "golly gee willakers" looks and attitude. Such a sad loss.

Met a few of these that have been mentioned. Always had lunch w cam at shows. Another one that spent quite a bit of time on the open forum but did collect buff nicks was Coinhead1. Gary was a super dude. When that wicked hurricane went thru Gulf Shores several years back he actually went and found a friend of my aunt's for me that she was unable to reach!

Speety was a great kid who I had the pleasure to meet a couple of times at a local coin shows. He and his dad's collection of Seated Dollars was amazing. He never knew it but he influenced my daughter's decision to go to the University of Cincinnati where she is excelling,,,, Thank you Mark!

    Sent you a PM.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Some really cool names in this thread.
    Larry

  • Yes, there are many. So many good folks and collectors big and small. There are some folks I did not know so well, but I whose posts I read, and do not know if they passed on or...just passed on. All good folks. Maybe a "whatever happened to" thread someone else can start if there is not one already. Hopefully, when a newbie reads the old threads in a search, they can learn a little more about those who came before and search their posts and learn still more. Thanks for all the nice posts and links image
