Buried or Not Buried?: That is the Question - PCGS PR70 DCAM 1995-W SAE Sells in Excess of $86,000

What do you think about the following auction? Is the price realized the result of legitimate market forces (i.e. the coin's value has simply increased) or is this a fluke that is not reproducible?
The last PCGS example in this grade sold for $19,500 in a 2011 Stacks-Bowers auction.

Edited to add: Final Price $79k hammer, $86+k with juice.

<< <i>The funny thing to me is this: Since milk spots are not covered under the PCGS guarantee anymore, the coin is literally one milk spot away from being an approximately $3k-$5k coin. >>
exactly: ONE milk spot away ..............crazy money.

The buyer must be gambling that if it was going to spot, that it would have done so by now. Not sure when it was slabbed, but proof coins are generally easier to successfully remove any "milk spots" from. If it was slabbed during the time when PCGS was still honoring the warranty, it could have been dipped prior to encapsulation.

Crazy money indeed. What happens to the price when a few more get made?

<< <i>I agree with the price guide editor that the coin is worth about $25,000. since the pop has rise by more than 50 percent in the past 60 to 90 days there is no logical reason the coin sold for even half what it sold for. As always just my 2 cents. Wondercoin. >>
While I agree with your logic and you know your moderns, it would appear that the market disagrees. That said I think this is clearly two "got To have it whales" going at it and I suspect it would be hard to duplicate.

Perhaps easier to duplicate the PCGS PR70 DCAM 1995-W SAE

<< <i>Insane buy, especially in a new PCGS holder. The "if it was going to spot by now, it would have"theory goes out the window as soon as you put the ASE in a new PCGS holder. A huge gamble and based on everyone's experiences (on this board )with ASEs in PCGS holders, a 35-60% chance that coin will spot . >>
That coin isn't in a prong/ed holder so it has to have been in that one for at least 2 years. The holders don't make the coins spot. The spots are already there. If twas me I'd be a looking at that coin under a halogen light or something similar that might be revealing of any potential to spot. I have it on good authority that sometimes up to half of the coins in a bulk submission arrive at PCGS already spotted, so I think that there is a pretty good chance that others from the same lot will eventually develop spots too. IMO the fact that they seem to spot less in other TPG holders is more of an artifact of distribution than anything else. I think it is also possible that the high frequency ultrasonic energy from the sonic sealer may get transferred to the coin hasten the reaction between the coin and whatever contaminant is present.

<< <i>More money than brains I think. >>
Maybe speculatin' in the silver market
That is a crazy risk.
Just think of the rare early American coins you could buy with $86,000. There are thousands of this coin out there that are all Unc. just a notch or two below this one plus they just came out a few years ago. Then add in the millions of other ASE's of different dates but same design. What kind of Walker half could you buy for that kind of money?
Right now anyone getting excited about this is because of the $$$, not the rarity, history or beauty of the coin.
Successful BST deals with mustangt and jesbroken. Now EVERYTHING is for sale.
Client sold ____ to customer overseas for a quarter mil. Food for thought !

<< <i>Eventually this coin will bring six figures. It might not be in my lifetime though and in this auction? It went for double the price anybody would have estimated. >>
I guess we know who the buyer is.
<< <i>The things that make the news in coins shock many people. A lot of those people are renters. >>
Agreed. To a billionaire this is chump change. The equivalent of a $10 bill to me with my $100k net worth.
<< <i>Bajerfan guess you'd advocate cracking $86,000 stable red copper in OGHs and reslabbing to get the cool new slabs as well. With no spot guarantee this buyer just took a huge financial risk buying a recently encapsulated ASE. >>
I'm not advocating anything. I'm not into this series so is this a fairly new label? Are they still using those older style holders for special situations? Perhaps the buyer doesn't know that the guarantee is no longer in effect. Should sellers now be disclosing the fact that these coins are no longer covered under the PCGS guarantee or does caveat emptor rule the day?

>>
Does she think that you're a genius if you sell those overpriced coins for a profit?
