*IF* the DS packs are going to be a go -- could we limit the first round to one pack each, to ensure that everyone has a chance at one? I am assuming most, if not all, of these are going to remain in the slabs and it is unlikely that an opportunity like this will come up frequently.
  • tmgrnzx9rtmgrnzx9r Posts: 546 ✭✭✭
I'd be in for a DS pack as well if they can be graded. I think that you would have to have a limit to one per person for the first 48 hours. Chances are they won't last that long if this is a go.

I've already said I'd be in for one but I'm saying it again just in case my previous mention doesn't count.

The DS packs will be in high demand but I am sure reserving will start at a later time when official rip is posted.

I too would be interested in a pack. PSA I would keep, if raw I would rip.

  • Hello everyone!

I put in some thought and discussion with others about slabbing the Desert Shield packs. We have come to the conclusion that we will not holder these packs. I realize that statistics could put a very, very good chance on packs being slabbed would be Desert Shield packs. However, we had to look at the broader picture of doing so. I realize that most all the people on this board know me and my company. Most would know that I try my hardest to get things right or make right. The problem is that there are far more people out there who are not on these boards who would not understand how these packs can be slabbed.

First of all, we probably have a few hundred people on these boards who buy from us regularly. You guys are great customers and are very knowledgable and passionate about this industry. However, the rest of the buying public would have a mixed perception of what the heck would be going on. A customer out there would possibly see a pack at a show, on ebay or in an auction and ask, "How the hell can Steve determine if those are real packs, or just regular 1991 Topps packs?" Also, I can imagine the problems Joe O would get if someone opened a pack and then "claimed" the cards were not Desert Shield cards. Furthermore, PSA and I have turned down many people in the past who wanted to get their packs labeled as "Desert Shield" packs.

Ultimately, my final decision was based on the fact that the appearance of slabbing these packs would be an advantage to someone. That someone being me. If we turned down people in the past on slabbing their packs, it sure would look like I was getting special treatment. I know that by slabbing my packs of Desert Shield packs would benefit me. They would be easier to sell and command a premium. I assume it would also benefit you guys who then bought these packs to an extent. However, any perception of advantage that I would gain is just not going to happen. We use many advantages here at our company each and every day that are not controversial (advertising, great employees, long hours, etc). The situation involved with slabbing these packs would be a controversial advantage that I will not allow.

With that being said, Rick and I are considering how we can sell these packs with a little added protection and comfort to our customers. We are considering using a larger top-load holder as the pack backing, shrinkwrapping them (like we do for our full boxes) and then adding the same sticker we put on the bottom of our boxes. As someone mentioned earlier, this is not intended to be an end-all solution to tampering (someone could reproduce our packaging), but would be something that would be added protection. I would gladly listen to any thoughts or ideas anyone has. Again, as I have mentioned in the past, anyone who would like to ask me anything can directly e-mail me at: bbcexchange@sprintmail.com

    Thanks! Steve Hart

As much as I want a slabbed DS pack, that is a very well thought-out and fair conclusion.

    Thanks BBCE/Steve...

    Tim,

You are correct. I was just kidding around. I actually would not be in on the DS packs but appreciate Steve's response.
I got a few of the cards and they are nice. I'm sure a pack would be cool too but not my area of interest.

    Steve,

Thanks for posting. My feelings about this request echoes yours and as much as it would be cool to have PSA holder them, I think this is the correct decision for the benefit of all collectors.

  • Wow!

I've rarely...nah...never seen a private business go to such lengths to both provide a public explanation of their thought process, and work so hard to maintain fairness and transparency.

I know if the govt organization I work for took these same steps, the local media would have nothing to write about!
  • Can the discussion remain though on including that box in this and rippin' the carp out of the packs when we get them ? We don't need no stinkin unopened stuff to exist. image

Having done a bunch of the leg work behind the scenes on this I want to thank Steve for both the effort
to get the DS packs considered and for his open and forthright explanation that he published for all to see.

While I am sure that we are all disappointed that DS packs will not be slabbed, I think there is almost unanimous
support for the integrity and ethics demonstrated by the person who is primarily behind the decision that was reached.

    Guys,

A couple of things. First, Hockeycrazy was correct. I was supposed to un-veil the "mystery box" last night but I honestly forgot. I know everyone thought the DS box was it but boys, I have one better. We will be including a full box of 1976 Topps BB cello. Better than that, it has some major star power on top. Two packs have Tom Seaver, one pack has Tom Seaver RB, one pack has Reggie Jackson, one pack has Hank Aaron RB, and packs with Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Lefty Grove, Pie Traynor and Rogers Hornsby All time all stars. I believe the rest of the packs have Reds on top.

Now, Doug (dcanfield) and I emailed Steve when this box came available but Doug beat me by about 30 minutes. After talking with Doug, he more than graciously made the box available to the group. HUGE KUDOS TO DOUG. A very selfless act and a true good guy on the boards. Now, we will be offering these 2/person. I have to get the official price from Steve but they will be around $96/ea.

Secondly, here is a list of what we will be busting. I don't have all the prices yet because for some reason I forgot to write the prices down and Steve took some of the boxes off his website. I will have these by tomorrow morning.

Lastly, before I add the DS box, I need to see more interest now that we are not going to grade the packs. There are 36 packs at $125/pack. I know Steve isn't going to partial sell this box so I want to make sure we can sell this out.

We will start the break tomorrow night at 9:00 PM EST.
