Next BBCE Group Rip

Guys, it seems some of you have been going through rippage withdrawals. I have talked with Steve and reserved the following boxes for us. I am not going to start the group rip until NEXT WEDNESDAY (02/27) because I have a pretty busy week. Please don't reply to this thread to reserve packs. I will start a new thread as always next Wednesday.

The boxes listed below is what we will rip. Take a look and let me know if there is anything on the list you don't think we need or if there is something I have missed that we would like to add. As usual, we need more than one person to add or delete something.

Lastly, I have ONE special box that I have added but am not going to say yet.........just thought I would keep everyone in suspense but trust me, it is REALLY NICE. I will post what the box is on Monday.

yeah, that 72 box is absolutely amazing, but I have to agree with mygotta, not sure I could even afford 1 pack. At thirty something a box the 81 donruss wax case is intriguing as well, unless that is too much along with the 82 case.

I saw that 72 box as well. I would be interested in a pack.

What's funny, however, is that the individual packs are $275/ea, which works out to $6600 for a box, but the box is priced at $6900. What gives?

A collector's premium is added for a full intact box as opposed to loose packs from that year.

I imagine this would be the premium for a complete and intact, original box.
  • The last box he had was $6600 a couple months ago. Perhaps these packs are from that buy and thus the $275 price for the few loose ones left. They'll probably be $290-300 or more next time.

Could be. I also hear you guys on the premium, but $300 is a pretty big premium for a '72 box. Give me a 25th pack for that bump and you can keep the box!

They do not holder the desert shield packs. Its my understanding that there is no way to tell if its just a regular pack or a desert shield pack.
If you buy one from bbce, just ask Steve if he can maybe wrap it like the boxes and label it for you. That is of course if you plan on keeping it sealed and not opening it.

Why break up that beautiful 1972 box when BBCE has been offering loose packs of the same series for months? Presumably they are from boxes broken by BBCE and I am sure he has a bunch.

There is apparently no way to differentiate between regular 1991 Topps BB packs and 1991 DS packs.

The way Steve authenticates these boxes is to open 4 random packs from different levels throughout the box.
He then replaces the packs he removed with known DS packs.

Verified 1991 Topps DS boxes are definitely a rarity. However, I am not so sure that unverified boxes are all that
rare. I would agree that ripping any of the few of these that exist would be a shame.

The story about the troops getting them overseas is not the full story. They were also distributed here in the USA
at the PX store at many military bases. While you might not find unopened cases, it would not surprise me that
quite a few indivudal boxes are probably still "around". In fact, it was only December last year that I was made aware
of 2 such unverified boxes being offered for sale.

Trust me, it has crossed my mind! If I had those kind of funds it would already be sitting comfortably in my collection. It was acquired on one of the recent buying trips and being a Desert Shield collector I marveled at it when it showed up on the BBCE site.

I would be in for a desert shield pack. How much is it per pack. Since Steve authenticates the packs is there any way we could work something out with him and psa? Any way could purchase the box and then fill out a sub form for all of the packs... Send the payment to psa with the sub form but keep the packs at bbce.. Psa sends the sub form to bbce, bbce sends the form back with the authenticated packs and then psa grades them. It's pretty crazy but it just might work. It's a really cool pack IMO but would be that much cooler slabbed

I don't have any pull with psa or bbce but don't mind coordinating some emails between the 2 to get the ball rolling. It's worth a shot I think. What is is everybody's suggestion for how to proceed? If anyone has a good contact feel free to take the reigns on this. I'm just throwing the idea out there

Just like the 1972, he is offering the Desert Shield in loose packs. This is the type item that is far more valuable unopened as opened due to the nature of its distribution, so I doubt Steve would go for this as a group "rip".

He's a businessman. I don't know why he'd care if he gets the $5,000 via a group rip, a collector that's going to hold the box, or someone that buys the box and rips it? As long as the group rip results in all 36 packs being sold I'm sure he's in

I like non-sports cards. And can appreciate the value/scarcity of certain ones. But I am not sure I could justify $300 for a pack of Batman cards. For that much, I would be getting the 72 box.

Loved Batman as a kid, but BB is my passion and
the 1972s I pulled the last time we broke a box yielded some
high end gems. Apparently the boxes came from a full case that was
put away and stored by a former Topps executive.

I'm fairly certain BBCE subs packs.
  • ReggieClevelandReggieCleveland Posts: 3,818 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't see a conflict of interest. If you buy from BBCE you're paying for Steve's authentication and reputation. His slabbed packs are usually just the cost of a raw pack with the grading fees added. Maybe a slight bump for older stuff that comes back PSA 8 or 9 but Steve has no control over or say in the grade of a wax pack, just the authentication.
  • 70ToppsFanatic70ToppsFanatic Posts: 2,106 ✭✭✭✭
Most of us know Steve well enough to be confident that he would not permit
himself to get involved in something that would be a conflict of interest. How
many of us have heard him say, "...this is how I feed my family..."?

PSA brought Steve in to get the best quality opinion on unopened authenticity
that is available today. PSA authenticates Topps BB packs (and many others too).
If Steve authenticates the pack then I believe they would slab it.

That being said, I also think that it would be very difficult to do individual
DS packs from a break. Much easier to verify the full box which he sealed
himself versus 36 individual packs after a break.

If you guys are seriously thinking about the DS box I suggest it be done
based on having the break be for 36 slabbed packs and have Steve just
submit the whole box himself once it is fully subscribed. Price per pack
    to include the grading costs.

That would be a new twist on a break/rip

I can call Steve tomorrow and ask if possible (or Mark can).

I see no reason for PSA to turn down a Topps BB pack that
    Steve has verified as legit.

Just think, there will never be very many of these packs slabbed.
How many full box submissions that have been verified by the
recognized expert chosen by PSA will there ever be?

Steve has said that PSA will never be able to slab the DS packs. I think we're all barking up the wrong tree on this one.
