My first vote would be for 'roadrunner'.

Your idea is off the wall but it would get rid of the crazy posts such as " I stubbed my toe today, post a coin with a toe on it"....

If only 10 people could start threads this place would slow to a crawl and most people would stop visiting and go elsewhere.

Nothing says you can't PM the thread starters with your topic suggestions (unless of course, they have you on ignore...).

I would hope too you'd select active participants as part of your overall criteria.
The posters within the thread- all of us not picked to start a thread- would be pretty lively, I'd think.

I nominate braddick for the #1 position as thread initiator. He will be required to be on call 24/7/365, with his email address linked to his i-phone, which must be set on high volume alarm for every thread request made. image

    In a word NO!!!

I believe in political and economic democracy. If you believe that new ideas should be limited to the few, after a while you don't have any new ideas. The electorate will reject the bad new ideas and the good new ideas will gain traction. That is why I believe in the fundamentals of democracy.

Yes, I agree. The party requesting a thread launch should get a free voucher. The moderators will be too busy answering requests to have time for redeeming vouchers. image

This place would die quickly if that was the case.

But I'll play along. I would vote boiler78 as 1 of the ten. Some of the greatest patters are posted by this guy and I enjoy seeing them every time he posts.
  • This is a much more active site than NGCs for sure, what happened over there to make the action in creative posts so insipid and lifeless? Many good queries go unanswered for days.

Well I'm glad that the tolerance levels are better than average here and I have not seen that much in rude or offensive posting happening. I have seen sites where troublesome members have been rightly put on moderated status. Not an easy task for management to filter through all the members' posts and make judgments on which may need to be deleted, etc..

The problem is too many different forums. Any forum that has a million different categories to post is dead, and I do not like them because you have to monitor too many areas. We are lucky that our host has kept this nice and simple. No coin forum has enough traffic to warrant more than a single U.S. Coin forum. Precious metals/BST etc. are fine, but don't separate errors, moderns, etc. it just doesn't make sense as topics can overlap.

Also to answer the question, I think if this 10 person limit was implemented, those people should just create a blog. I agree that there are amazing experts here and would read a forum with only 10 of the top posting, I just think that more than 10 people contribute to this forum on a regular basis.

Don't know about anyone else, but I gave up because too many posters insisted on sigfile images that caused me to have to scroll side to side to read the posts.

So, we can agree the consensus is an abrupt, "NO, but thanks for playing" in response to the OP inquiry?

    The majority has spoken.

I could be wrong, but I think that many of you have missed the real point of Braddick's question. If I am correct, he is not seriously suggesting that the forum moderator actually adopt his premise - that only ten members be allowed to initiate threads. His was an hypothetical question, a 'what-if'. Another way of asking his original question would be to simply ask "Who originates the threads you enjoy reading the most?". All of the responses suggesting that this place would become boring if this were to happen are absolutely correct, in my opinion. But whose original OP's do you most enjoy reading?

I know I will forget a few of my favorites, but I would nominate (in no particular order) Pistareen, Longacre, Rhedden, Bill Jones, Barndog, Astrorat, Coinosaurus, Roadrunner, TomB, and even though I do not collect tokens and medals I would have to include coinsarefun just for the sheer enthusiasm she exudes.

You're not wrong, but in defense of others, I didn't post my inquiry properly, I suppose.

  • It would be easy as pie. Get ten people that have a lot of time that post and reply a lot. Some folks seem to spend 8 hours a day on the forum, get them if they are willing.

Draw up a list of MegaThreads, such as the Barber Megathread, the Gold Economic Megathread, but have like 50 of them. Have people post to the Megathread for their series or area of specialty. Have another MegaThread for the sole purpose of suggesting New Threads with the understanding that new threads are going to relatively infrequent. The ten will monitor the requests, and make a new thread, if the topic seems broad enough and worthy enough. The kind of post that would suffer the most in this system are the polls, because it would be time intensive to outline that as a request and then have a "moderator" (one of the 10) recreate that. Simple polls might be aggregated, but some of the more complex polls would go. For sure, traffic would suffer and newbies would get very confused, but for the oldtimers it would mostly work out okay.

The forum would basically turn into a blog with 10 authors.

There's no way the forum could maintain it's level of activity if this were the case but perhaps that's not the goal. It's possible for the forum to stabilize at a lower level of activity.

Even with the solution mentioned by RedTiger above, I think a lot of old timers would drift away as the variety of posts decreased.

I did not read all the previous posts. If only ten people were allowed to start PCGS forum threads, this forum would be done over in a few days. I think such a thought is ridiculous. I know I would no longer be a participant on the PCGS forums.

Steph and Charmey always have interesting posts with great pics. I would certainly vote for them as part of the ten and having at least a few lady posters here is never a bad thing. Wouldn't it be great if we could get Laura back?
