Which 14-s buff would you keep?

ad4400ad4400 Posts: 2,105 ✭✭✭✭✭

Both are graded the same. Both imaged by CHD. I’ve formed some opinions which is technically stronger, which I can share later.

Coin 1 has been in the set for many years. Every time I’ve considered upgrading and compare to next grade up, I decide to stay put. Great subtle color and ‘intagibles’ have kept me happy for many years.

Enter Coin 2. I really like look of surfaces , but it does not have the same ‘pop’ of color. Super strong clashes add to a neato factor, plus a stronger obverse strike.

I like 2 for the strike.

I like 2 for the color and strike!

Top coin has a struck better reverse and bottom coin has the better obverse.....toss up for sure.

I personally don't care for the green hues on buffs but so many have them and so many collectors do......oh my.

    Stay with the top coin.

Overall I like the first one better. I like the colors, reverse looks a little better struck, and much cleaner looking without the die clash clutter (obverse), unless you're in to major clashes . . .

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

1 because I like the obverse the better of the 2 and because I find the reverse of 2nd one a bit unattractive.

    2nd one.

Another one of your excellent “flip a coin and send the other one to me” choices.

I guess if I had to pick, I’d want the coin to send me the 2nd one.

    2. Braid looks better. #1 has a line of reverse dings that concern me. #2. Not gospel as I am not a buff expert.

    Coin #1.

  • SmudgeSmudge Posts: 9,545 ✭✭✭✭✭

    How'd that get so big?

2 is way way better than #1. This is a non contest.

That's a tough decision but if my hand was forced; I would pick number 2 because of the better strike, luster and splashes of color.

Why not keep both? I like the original skin of the first one. Depends on if you like a bit of toning, or more brilliant. I don't see a lot of difference in the strike.

    2 for sure

1 for the color and #2 for the strike. I'd keep 'em both but if I had to choose I guess it would be #1.

Very tough call....the color and 'pop' of coin 1 is very popular right now, but I guess the pure look of 2 speaks more specifically to me.

Color is "in." I'd keep #1 in spite of the "cabinet friction." While #2 looks better and should grade higher it has spots and a planchet problem.

Now I'm going to read the thread to see if anyone picked #1 besides me. :p

Thanks guys, I just learned how to scream 1.

I forgot to mention the distracting clash marks too.

Coin 2 has a lot of cool stuff going on. I would love to look at that one under a loupe. Great coins.

  • crazyhounddogcrazyhounddog Posts: 13,980 ✭✭✭✭✭

1 for the color and all around look. But man! I like #2 for the strike and I must say the whiskers are strong on that one too.

If it were me, I’d most certainly keep them both.

Number 2 for the originality. What's with the scratches or whatever under the chin on #2?

They are not scratches. That's part of the planchet flaw that continues across the bison.

Personally I would go with #1. If I was building a set I would want all the coins to have a similar look. So is your set primarily colorful (#1) or strong strikes (#2) ?

Both coins were produced from different reverse dies. Both coins were clashed, the second coin receiving the more severe damage.

The "mess" under Iron Tails chin is actually a botched job that attempted to remove "E PLURIBUS" from that location.

Clashed dies do not affect the technical grade of a coin, but the clash itself can affect the "look" of the coin.

I like 2, even with the clash.

Here's an overlay that shows how a clash on a Buff will show up. Notice the heavy area under the chin.

2 has better overall strike and mintmark. The chocolate brown tone is even so it could stay as is or you could lighten it if you so choose too.

    Best place to buy !
