Present for a 5 year old

savitalesavitale Posts: 1,409 ✭✭✭✭✭

My daughter is about to turn 5. She has shown some interest in my coins so I’d like to give her something as a birthday present. She doesn’t yet have the attention span for Whitman folders. I’m thinking something shiny like “treasure” she can touch. Any ideas?

An inexpensive walking half or a silver eagle that she can hold and abuse?

I was thinking she would like the dolphins on an octagonal slug :o

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

You could get her a 2013 Qtr proof set. Fairly cheap and her birthyear just to see how much interest there is at her age.

A nice shiny AU Peace dollar - great design on both sides.

Stop thinking about you. Give her a dolly. There's a good chance that she'll keep the dolly for her whole life. Probably name the dolly "BABY." You'll be long gone and she'll still have BABY. She'll tell her daughter about BABY. She will buy her daughter a dolly. Your granddaughter will probably name that dolly BABY. I hope you're there to see it. Been there done that. Coins? For a 5 year old girl? No! Get her a dolly. She'll love you for it.....DADDY!

My five year old (nearly 6 now) is just starting to be able to read dates, which will lead to Whitman albums and roll searching, but before that she mainly liked big shiny "coins" (like colored aluminum medals) and real coins with animals on them. She would look for different animals in dealer foreign junk boxes. A nice selection of those would probably do the trick. Shiny and big are still important...

On a side note, she's completely taken over responsibility for checking the Coinstar machine at the supermarket, so that's another way to get them interested. ;)

You are a lucky man. Get her three circulated Morgans. Big chunks of silver. She’ll love playing with them.

P.S., Best thing you can do for your little girl? Tell her the truth. Tell her what you think every time you look at her. Tell her that she is the most beautiful girl in the WORLD! And that you love her. You can never tell her enough that you love her. It's what you think. So tell her. Every day. All the time. And be there for her. ALWAYS.

What @Hydrant said in both her posts....Oh...and there is just something about a 1964 Kennedy half.

Buy her a teddy bear (Every father should give their daughter(s) teddy bears) and a birth year ASE....Explain the coin is the same age as her and will always be the same age... Cheers, RickO

Something she can play with and easy to spot in a room. A big 5oz- 10 oz shinny silver coin! I got one for my 7 yr old last year. And she still plays with it.

Given some of the other posts, to clarify, I wasn't suggesting that the coins be her only gift... ;) . My five-year old would kill me if I did that.

You can also order a nice pretty smaller silver coin with crystal from Canadian mint then add a silver bezel and necklace from ebay. My 3yrs old loves it.

Forget the coins. Buy her an amount in your state's college tuition program if they have one.

If you want to give her a coin, make it an inexpensive 1881-S Morgan Dollar.

    All glory is fleeting.

Give her a SAC, it's a coin with a dolly.

I remember way back when I was that age (perdner 160 years ago, I reckon), and I was fascinated by "different" coins. I found an 1805 Hibernia half penny in a junk box for a quater and thought I'd found treasure. Where was Hibernia? Why is a half penny so much bigger than a "regular penny" (cents I found in change)?

Give her an old junk box coin that you think would catch her interest. It could be one that's really old, one with an animal she likes on it, or one with a weird shape (e.g. a scalloped edge coin from the Bahamas).

Maybe a Merc dime pendant or one of those 1/10 oz silver Walking Libs. on a necklace.

Get her the Frozen Disney coin. You can find them on EBay. I got one for my 6 year old granddaughter and she loved the coin. When she was 7, I got her a rainbow Morgan that did not work as well.

  • RogerBRogerB Posts: 8,852 ✭✭✭✭✭

Give her a little "Treasure Chest" of shiny coins from different countries. She will make her own enjoyment with them. (A 5 year old cannot conceptualize - a coin has no value of its own. Don't waste the time and your emotions on a "real" collector's coin of any kind.)

Definitely this. I gave my nephew an AU peace on his 5th birthday. Big enough for him to not to choke on, too. I know by that age kids don't normally try to eat stuff but if I recall correctly I was still putting all sorts of weird stuff in my mouth until, well, lol even today!

    =P

I do really like the idea of pick the coin, though. I'd try to do it at a show so there's a huuuuge variety to choose from. Not only is it kid's first coin, it'll be a memorable father/daughter experience.

  • thebeavthebeav Posts: 3,911 ✭✭✭✭✭

I would lean toward world stuff with animals on them. When I was a kid I thought the elephant on the Liberian dime was a most amazing thing !

A piggy bank, if that's what they are still calling them. I know they come in all shape, sizes and characters, then let her fill it up.

I like this one! Till she picks out the double eagle! >:)

This is totally what would happen. I do like the idea though ...

So many great ideas, thanks! She’s an only-grandaughter (both sides) so she’ll be swimming in conventional gifts. Yes, I think the way to go is to bring her to a show and see what treasure looks like to her. If that doesn’t work you’ve given me a lot of other options.

I did that and my 7yrs old first choice was a cc morgan in GSA holder from the show. Check the link below lol

    Birth-year American Silver Eagle.

Or any silver dollar. Just be sure it's SHINY and RAW (not slabbed, not in a capsule).

By time I was five I already had started three of my five main hobbies/interests, which I am still active in 29 years later. I would say get something that ties in with something she already likes.

I like the necklace idea but I would also remember she is only five and give her toys or electronics as well as the necklace.

She's 5. Value is irrelevant, but quantity is cool. Get her a handful of foreign stuff and a small wooden "treasure chest." Bonus points if the treasure chest can be decorated with shiny stuff.

How about a horse coin? Lots of choices, like this 1oz silver bullion:

Or maybe something mythical, like this recently-released 2oz silver bullion:

  • Did you figure out a gift for her? i know i'm late, i just joined. Wanted to chime in because as a kid i liked coins too. My parents bought me a state quarter collection board map when i was a kid. I lost it, of course, but while i had it i loved it. So i would say do something inexpensive but still meaningful. If you don't have much to spend you could even give her something from your change. They have all sorts of quarters and nickles with different designs on them, like the 2009 Lincoln ones. I always liked 'different' coins hence my collecting state quarters for a time as a kid. If you have a set laying around that might make a good gift too. At this age i'd recommend giving her something inexpensive and shiny to gauge her interest and responsibility to not lose whatever you give her like i did haha.

Coins are about as far away from ponies as you can get. Have you considered riding lessons?

    Shiny ounces of silver.
    Eagle Libertad, & Brittania coins.
Plus silver tones nicely in the right place. ( A cabinet, or on a felt pad, or ? ) They don't need protection. They need exposure to the air, or for now; her touch and "feel".
