The Mint has released the image of the 2018 Platinum Proof. It will go on sale on Jan 25, 2018 at noon.

Mintage Limit: 20,000
Product Limit: 20,000
Household Order Limit: 1

Price will be dependent on Platinum spot. If PM prices remain the same, the cost will be $1350 if platinum spot is $950-$999, $1400 if spot is between $1000 and $1049.

It will be the first of a three year "Preamble to the Declaration of Independence" series. (The 2019 coin will be labeled, "Liberty", and the 2020 coin, "Happiness".) All three years will have a common reverse.

They might have been better served just using the 2017 palladium design as a jumping off point

The rendering does not look as good as the black and white drawing... but I still like it. I MAY be in for one if the funds are available then.

Ugh. Reminds me of a wooden ode to Woodstock. Spousal like in delivery.
The eagle is OK, though. And Mark is right on.

I used to look forward to the Platinum issues. Now I'm mostly being bored.... by EVERYTHING the Mint is putting out.

Where have all the talented Artists gone?

The designs do not appeal to me... That being said, at least there is no crass commercialism involved. I do not collect platinum or palladium... I have an old fashioned attachment to gold and silver ;) Cheers, RickO

I think it's time to invite some ideas from the Pobjoy Mint. The US Mint has become an uninspiring collection of beltway swamp critters. Wasn't our great Leader supposed to be draining that swamp already? Perhaps outsourcing Coin design and production will be quicker than draining? One can only hope.

Too much social message the coin is trying to convey.....; too "busy" for me IMHO
I stay with my old silver & gold.

The whole thing just looks so Roman. Are those olive trees in the background?
Reminds me of that scene in the movie "Gladiator." You know, when Russell Crowe's character dies and is reunited with his murdered wife and child?
    Count me out (again.)

Something about this Coin reminds me of the Ellis Island ATB Quarter. Same Artist? Same committee ? Something seems the same.

    Mint's web page is up:

Preamble to the Declaration of Independence 2018 Platinum Proof Coin - Life (18EJ)

    Mintage Limit: 20,000
    Product Limit: 20,000
    Household Order Limit: 1

If their pricing remains the same for PM's in 2018, it will probably cost $1350 or $1400. Since Platinum has been moving up over the past few weeks, it will probably be $1400 if spot exceeds $1000 at the time of release...

I think 20K is very, highly optimistic, even for the start of a three year series...

I think the swamp drain has become hopelessly clogged.

$1,420 list price (vs. $1,020 spot)

(last year's price grid would have been $1,400)

Let's start rumors about the fact that the belt buckle looks like a Euro sign!

Maybe this indicates that the US Government intends to join the European Union and do away with dollars! ;)

Save your money and read the document. Stuff like this is why my type set is expanding very slowly with none these over priced collector flytraps included.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

What was up with the PCGS special label email and then pulling it shortly thereafter? Weird.

MarkStephenson had all three labels in a post this morning. They were a colorized version of the coin. They looked pretty nice. But the post was removed before I could ask if I could buy the label without the coin...

I thought the colorized labels looked like cheap colorized coins. I figured that might be the feedback they were getting so they pulled them.

From these numbers we can guess how big the special slabs scramble is. Also from returns we can guess what % of Mint Coins are non 70's.

Even in the event it does sell half it's mintage, you gotta figure out who you are going to sell this mutt to.... or are you ready to hold?
    For "beauty's" sake?
My guess is that these numbers are largely supported by the dealers and the subsequent slabbing.

I saw this coin in hand over the weekend. It looks MUCH MUCH better in person than the Mint line drawings. Very sharp, detailed features. Quite attractive actually.

[I'm still not willing to pay the premium.]

I think I saw a short video of one of these on instagram, but would love to see a good picture of one if anyone has one. It seems sometimes the mint shoots itself in the foot by having terrible renditions of their coins. Why not post actual pictures? If someone like Daniel Carr can do it, they should be able to as well.
