Hold the slab by the bottom left side, tap it on a table, it will s-l-o-w--l-y move around.

I use an electric trimmer. Just hold it up against the slab, and the vibrations rotate it back to where it should be.

Most people would assume you were talking about coins with obverse and reverse dies misalignment, not an arbitrary rotation within a slab that is usually easily fixed.

I've only seen chocolate smear and cookie/cake crumbs besides the hair, skin flakes, dust, various white particles on dark copper, fresh finger-grease prints, and lint. :)

Nature. Many pcgs coins have turned over time. Whether from riding in a bumpy car, carried in a pocket, etc. The old rattlers are VERY easily turned. I always try to get them straight before I ship to a customer, but I would imagine most of the time they arrive crooked from riding in bumpy planes, trucks, etc.

Yes. The soft plastic part of the holder can still turn, as it is the shape of a circle still. The prongs have no effect on it.

Coins that are rotated in the slab really bug me. Yes, I know that you can tap a table with the slab and move it back, but the trouble is they always rotate again. A trip the bank will do it. I have an very high end 1856 large cent that is afflicted with this problem.

I don't mind the rotation as much as when a coin is not in the prongs properly, like crooked. I don't think you can really fix that, especially with small coins like 3CS

  • BaleyBaley Posts: 22,663 ✭✭✭✭✭

Of course prefer the coin to be straight, but it only bothers me a little when coins rotate a bit in the holder, whether slab or album or other display.
Knowing i can straighten a specific item with small bother, any time, actually kind of keeps me from bothering very often.

The OP's coin suggests that the coin rotates, not the rubber gasket/prongs. This is my experience as well.

Yes crooked is a minor annoyance. My 1808 quarter eagle is crooked, and that makes it harder to photograph the piece. The trouble is it's in an old green label holder so re-holdering it would probably lower the value.

@BillJones Perhaps as it's a quarter eagle, and has a little heft to it, maybe the holder can be smacked on a counter top to align the coin? I know with the lighter weight coins it's impossible, but gold has some weight.. Might be worth a try.
I definitely wouldn't reholder an OGH

Actually, if you look at the 1909-S cent that was posted, it appears both the coin and the rubber insert BOTH rotate. Interesting.

For some dumb reason I was thinking of a hedge trimmer. Probably because that is what I was doing the other day...then I rediscoverd a wasp nest...oh yes...it's all coming back to me now.

Yah, it must of electrified it. ;)

I'm trying to play with my scan settings, but not really having great luck getting a true to life image. The actual coin looks brighter than my first photo, but not as bright as the second photo. I will probably need some photo editing software to edit it true to life or get a real camera and a copy stand set up. The later is my hope at some point in the future.

It's a pain but a lot of coins rotate in holders, even new ones. I notice it worst after flying to or from a show and seeing 4-5 coins rotated or more if there are rattlers. Usually can get them back centered but the vibrations of the plane get them rotating sometimes.

You can lightly tap (with persistence, no need to smack hard) the holder on its edges against a hard surface, table, chair, whatever, and rotate the coin inside to your desired position. No need to go high tech with an electric toothbrush, although it is still more high tech to do it that way. ;)
