Holes

I pulled out my long-completed Dansco 7070, which I have not opened for several years with thoughts of perhaps trying to sell it, when much to my horror I saw that there were four holes:
Barber Quarter
Type I Standing Liberty Quarter
Liberty Seated Half (With Motto)
Barber Half
My first, fleeting thought was questioning who would rifle through my 7070 and purloin those four coins? I quickly remembered that I pulled those four out at some point to grade and sell them, with the intent of replacing them down the road.
Well, here we are down the road, and I am conflicted about whether or not to fill the holes, which could be quickly done with a single phone call to JJ Teaparty.
As I peruse the album, there are some found memories and some atypical 7070 coins: 70-CC $1, 39-O 50c (ex-Revier), and a rare, ex-Legend Eisenhower dollar (!) .
I also see memories of forum members present, past and passed-- my shield nickel from IGWT (Lou), my toned roosie dime from FC57 (Frank), and my Kennedy half from Russ (Russ), all since departed. There is a Jeff nickel from Keets, a seated quarter from mgoodm3, a Wash quarter from LucyBop, a Franklin half from TomB and a merc dime from ptvetter, to name a few (at least the ones that I can remember). So many memories.
So what to do about the holes...

Actuarially, selling you the hole fillers might be risky.
It sounds like you are conflicted as to whether you should really say goodbye to coin collecting. Perhaps it is best to just put the 7070, four empty spaces and all, away for awhile longer until you make the final decision.

10-1 you fill them. Great story by the way!
fill the holes! That is what we do.
I think that collections like this are valued based upon the value of each coin. I think that you would only lose money by filling the holes. Most very recent purchases don't break even.
Like the others I think that you are having second thoughts in any case because of the sources of some of the coins. Remember once the coins are sold, they are usually gone for good.
would 50-50 bother you? fill with in expensive examples?
if that bothers your sensibilities ask yourself if you'd miss the real money or not.
Do not sell. You are still a coin enthusiast deep down. Do not quickly fill the holes either, but rather take your time and fill them when a piece really grabs your attention. You can always change your mind and sell later. For now, do not sell.
How does one get a hater to stop hating?

Your financial planner would tell you to sell it as-is, since adding additional pieces wouldn't improve your return.
Your numismatic buddies would certainly tell you to fill the remaining holes.... but not without carefully selecting pieces equal to the others in the album.
Your therapist would explore the inner need and desire to collect in the first place.
Personally, I'd buy it all right now at 10X face value.
Take your time and fill them well. More memories. More stories. More relationships. More coins. More fun.
That's numismatics and is there for you whenever you want to play.

I think this is really good advice.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

Great post!
What would my wife say? My mother? My orthopedic surgeon? My travel planner?
Had the same discovery a couple years ago - bought a 22 Lincoln to fill that hole in my childhood album.
Wait until the dead of winter when it's too cold to run. It will give you something to do.
If I could fill my remaining holes at 10x face right now, I'd DO it!
Cherish the memories. Plug the holes. Easier said than done for some.
Plug the holes with coins from some other members here. You have what amounts to a numismatic yearbook of fellow collectors.... Both the coins and their source elicit fond memories of friendships - a treasure that cannot be bought or sold. A collection such as you have described is not valued in dollars. Cheers, RickO
