How Focused is Your Collection?

My focus is almost completely on my quarter registry. However, I find myself occasionally wanting to buy other random coins that don't fit the set.
I end up not buying the other ones, because it would take away from the money that I allocate each month for quarters.
Does anybody else have this "problem"? Is your collection completely focused in one area? Or do you stray? Or is it all over the place?

My focus is on my 19th Century Everyman Type Set (No Gold).

Started and in process of completing a couple different series (SLQ, Buffalo, Peace, & IHC).
Always trying to upgrade/complete an MS63/better 1909 to 1058 Lincoln set............
So....focused, yes, but.....I don't turn down nice coins when the opportunity arrives.
I'm totally focused at this juncture in time on three registry sets, for a total of 48 coins.
I'm getting ready to sell everything else that I have collected/accumulated over the last 40 years.

I'm very focused. When I see a nice coin I buy it.
Not very, but I find pleasure in the coins I have.
From some people's perspective. I'm not focused, but if you ask me how the various parts of my collection can be glued together, I can give you some coherent answers. For example, the Classic Head gold sets I’ve been putting together for the past few years go with my Hard Times tokens and my other Jackson era presidential campaign tokens. My set of British kings ties in with Massachusetts Silver and my Lord Baltimore six pence. My “Bryan Money” ties in with my 1896 silver dollar and $20 gold piece.
I have very few, if any pieces, that don’t tie in, in some way, with other aspects of my collection.
I've collected almost everything.
Now I specialize in modern US and world coins, tokens, and medals.
Though I do collect some classic US tokens.
The focus of a shotgun blast with #7 pellets.
I collect what I like!

whatever catches my notice winds up in my collection

I should be classified as an accumulator. Dark side and lite side. Mostly modern (which I define as after 1793). I should have been more focused years ago but we are 'too soon old and too late smart'. Most of it has afforded much pleasure and enjoyment.
I suppose that, particularly when compared with other comments here, my focus has been rather laser-like, with a distinct and exclusive focus on United States half dimes of all series, and has been so for over thirty years. And any diversion from that strict focus over the years has been in the form of short-lived assemblies of other classic coin series merely as a temporary war chest, which were soon liquidated for other half dime purchases. I think the common denominator between all of us here is that we collect what we like.
I think @MrHalfDime has hit the nail on the head

I focus on buffalo nickels and have for many, many years. I feel very confident with the series.
1791 to 1821 year / variety run for the same mint and denomination, toned and in PCGS plastic. Sometimes I think I'm a bit too focused.
8 Reales Madness Collection
my collection is a date run of early quarter eagles 1796 through 1834. i stray very little - mainly into other quarter eagles (liberty and classic) from a type perspective.
I like my double dimes. Only four years of production to keep track of. It fits my attention span.
Oh yeah very focused ........check out my sig line

It's pretty focused. I am able to find a coin to buy once every couple of years now.

Used to collect no motto half eagles exclusively.
Now I have branched out into world coins in early America, in Spanish colonial pieces, and basically any cool high end type Latin American coins I can find. Oh and high end Irish moderns.

Very focused. Don't wanna share on what. But very focused. Like a fat guy on a cheeseburger focused. I am that guy.
I mean.... that focused. Yeah... that focused. That's what I meant.....
Insert witicism here. [ xxx ]
Hard to believe Joe..... and I have to say that you are one of my coin collecting hero's along with MrHalf Dime.
What the heck ever happened to quarternut?
BTW,
I'm laser focused on my 2 cent pieces
Fairly focused. I buy early copper cents almost exclusively, but I'm tempted when a nice colonial comes up.
Laser focused. Liberty $2.50's only and PCGS/CAC only.

I used to be very focused on my IHC PR registry set (Paha sapa Indians). But that set is complete and rates about 66 for a toned set so there is not much headroom for improvement. Soooo, I now collect small cent toned proofs. But I keep dreaming of Buff Nickel PR coins........short series and gorgeous.

Buffs and Half Dimes (Seated). Thank God for this forum, so much knowledge here!
I focus for a while.... then I focus on something else.... sometimes a series, sometimes a single coin (such as now). Reviewing my rather extensive coin holdings, that summary is quite accurate. Cheers, RickO
Being a husband, father of three, working a full and part time job there is little time to donate to numismatics. So being a box of 20 guy works for me. I don't have to be focused if I don't want to be
Not at all . Any thing copper, silver or gold. Ha. But I tend to gravitate toward Silver dollars.

I went from collecting everything to being extremely focused.

I feel the same as you and resist the urge to stray. I use to buy other coins i liked but what i found is that i am a much better collector sticking to my series and being an expert on it.
...like rat turds in a dresser drawer.
I'm still working on a never ending type set with very little focus on any one type. I'm just looking for really pretty coins.
I like a variety so to keep my focus my set will consist of a few of each type of 19th and 20th century coins.
My other hobby of baseball cards is extremely focused on Nolan Ryan and nothing else.
So in general I would say my collection is focused and ties together.

I'm in complete agreement with this strategy.
My focus has been on Buffalo Nickels and coin boards for years and although I enjoy looking at other items, I've managed to maintain my focus. I'll never complete my coin board collection since they are so difficulty to locate although they are cheap. On the other hand, Buffalo Nickels are down right expensive so buying a bunch of non related items only reduces my "fun money".
During my adult coin collecting life I started out scattershot for about 7 years.
Then for about 15 years I was laser focused - I collected just one coin type in the grade range of VF-XF.
Then for the next 4 years I diversified into two different series. One series was MS66 or better, the other series was AU58 exclusively.
For the past few years I've collected (what I consider) attractive coins that I can afford regardless of type or grade.
At one time, my collecting would be considered very focused, 1801-1807 half dollars by die marriage. Since 2000, my collecting is more diverse, but still centered on early US coins, embossed stamps, paper money, and medals, including my recent purchase of a medal engraved by Moritz Furst. Also, eighteenth century illustrated US published books, manuscripts from early engravers, and anything pre-1825 related to US engravers that will increase my knowledge of early American engraving.
Basically, I collect anything related to early US engraving, with an emphasis on items engraved by Robert Scot.
I am the most unfocused collector ever. I am a wonderer. I buy what I like, but try to build one set at a time. It does not work.. I am here and there and everywhere, all at the same time. However, my coin collection is most organized thing in my life. All my collections are organized in albums. Bob
I buy what I like and find that to be the most fun lately.

When it comes to focus, I do better when shooting photos of coins than when buying them.
My collection is focused on Peace Dollars. However, if I see a nice coin at a good price I won't pass it up.
My goal was extremely focused, I wanted one coin or token of every design ever made on the planet. I failed miserably but it was fun.
Successful BST deals with mustangt and jesbroken. Now EVERYTHING is for sale.
My CRC Inventory is organized by US Vintage Coins, US Mods (1965 and after), and World Coins. I believe there is tremendous potential in World.
My Currency Inventory is organized US and World. Many are certified. At a recent show sales of WPM (66 pct of total show sales) outperformed US and World Coins. Profit from WPM sales was 74 pct of total show profit.
Until the bids in the sheet for vintage Commems, Dollars, and Halves show solid upward movement the market will remain stagnant. Buyers on the bourse have been very hesitant. The fall in dollars and stagnation in Commems confirm this. Will MS 65 Dollars fall further?
Regardless I am a strong buyer of anything really nice I can get at 60 Pct MV or less.
A major NN advertiser (recent analysis /audit sample) showed Halves, Dollars, and Commems on average at CDN Bid plus 35 pct what I consider a mid range retail. This is no major variation from what I consider typical for the industry (there can be considerable variation for sample material some as low as 7pct others as high as 100 pct which are super PQ or rare can bring high markup.
I focus carefully on a coin, then buy it.

The only thing "focused" in my tiny collection is the 10x magnifier....
