Not sure about how much they're feeding him but I have a wild hunch he's gonna lose weight. That is, of course, he doesn't con the other inmates outta their food :)
    Thanks for the update.

That's a tough crime to sit in jail for. Conviction or not. I think his eyes will be opened to a whole new world...and not one of his choosing.

Damn, I was lucky to get paid by him for my last consignment. I am a lawyer so I put some heat on him and threatened "appropriate action" . I may have been the last onw who got paid. You could see his ship sinking a mile away.

He really sounds as though he was a man who got in over his head and never could figure out a way to get out. One suspects demon greed played a role. It usually does.

Tragic, but it's time to pay the piper.

The loan it sounds like he got caught up in sounds like a sad and unfortunate predicament.

More to the point of the discussions about his consignment business here...

If anyone was harboring hopes of being paid, the court approved his indigency petition and appointed a public defender. So there's no money in the tree.

Great reference . Barreta gave us that advice and ironically went on to do the crime himself , then did not do the time .

I used Shane's eBay selling services two or three times with very good results. He had a good following on The Bay. Seemed like a fair guy to me, although this was over five years ago. Really sad to hear about him completely unwinding like this.

All of this said, if he's guilty, I hope he pays a serious price. Very sad situation for all.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 'non-indigency' means that he HAS financial means, so if that was overruled, then they are saying that they don't agree, b/c he is 'in a state of poverty' or 'lacks financial means' and will be in need of a public defender.

Well he's still innocent until proven guilty but if that's the case it doesn't look good. Sick stuff. I wonder if drugs were found too and he just wasn't charged with it in lieu of the higher charges. If he had a meth addiction it would explain a lot with this and with suddenly not paying consignors.

so stealing from consignors is obviously bad , the child porn is a newer wrinkle , whats this about meth...... ???

oh well I'm sure the toned coins were all NT I doubt he would stoop to cross that line :*

@CascadeChris - I don't things drugs were involved at all.

In June 2012, Shane was fired from his job according to a post he made on the NGC Forums. This marked his transition to selling coins on eBay and coin dealing full time. In the thread, Shane remarked:

Yep that's right...the corporate world strikes again...I told an employee of the company that he was under review because of poor performance and that he needed to turn things around or he was going to be fired. He had a young daughter at home and I thought it was the right thing to do. Management said I didn't have the authority to share that with him so now they have a trust issue with me so I was fired on the spot. No final notice, no suspension...just give me your keys and get to stepping. So it looks like it's time to do coins full time for now and figure out a game plan for when the dust settles[.]

Approximately a year or so later, Shane moved from a nearby town to his last known address in Casselberry, FL. I think he began experiencing financial problems shortly thereafter and began having problems with paying his consignors. It may have been a case of him intending to borrow short term to feed his family, knowing that with his booming consignment business, he could quickly restore the funds and pay consignors so that no one would notice or lose money... until the coin market depreciated further. It doesn't make it right nor do I blame his consignors/creditors for being angry; however, I do not think it was initially Shane's intent to default and stick anyone. He had far too many chances to screw me when I sent him about $50k of stuff to photograph for me and never did. I think it is a case of bad luck and an incredibly stupid decision.

To be clear, I do NOT know for a FACT that this is what happened to the consignment proceeds, but before labeling him as a drug addict, etc., it is important to connect the dots that many may be overlooking.

I was just speculating as it could answer many questions. As to him being fired and deciding to not pay consignors I guess some people just make stupid decisions if that was the case. I recently had to dissolve my business due to my partners health and am currently unemployed living on savings and hustling coins until I figure something out. Trying to find a job In the numismatic field actually and even willing to relocate. Just in the past few months I've had many thousands in coins consigned to me and it never even entered my mind to just keep all the money. It's simply unethical and not to mention a game of musical chairs where the music stops eventually, and quickly. I just don't understand how people can make a willful decision to burn bridges and destroy their reputation, and for short terms gains no less.

I never said it wasn't his fault. If this is what happened, he still made that decision although I view it differently than someone who sets out to cheat people or steals money to feed a drug habit especially if restitution is ever made (although I doubt this will ever be the case at this point).

I've kept quiet on this issue for a long time, but I consigned a handful of coins through krypto a couple times. The last time was right before all the issues came to the forum. I did get my money but it came after a bunch of emails and persistence. I feel bad that the money I received might have been someone else's here that he "borrowed" from. I guess I should have raised a flag at that time, but it didn't dawn on me at that point that it was going to be an issue this large. Unfortunately, it looks like a lot of people are out a lot of money and it just sucks.

Is it possible someone had remote control of his computer? Maybe a family member was using his system.

I will say also with the charges he's facing and a public defender, he's guilty whether he is or not, unless Seminole County's are a lot better than ours. It may be a shame, but it is what it is.
