My 2017-P Lincoln error find.............The Lightning Bolt Lincoln

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,175 ✭✭✭✭✭
edited March 6, 2017 8:15PM in U.S. Coin Forum

So I bought a bank box of the new 2017-P Lincolns last week. I figure this one year type ( only P mintmark on a Lincoln) would be interesting to see and search for high grade examples and maybe an interesting error or two. The first couple of rolls yielded nothing much other than a lot of very beat up UNC "pennies." Then I ran across a few interesting examples that at first appeared to be well placed scratches through the top of the Shield. Than a few more found made me get out my 6x scope. And a big smile came across my face! They were well placed Die cracks!! I immediately called them the Lightning Bolt cracks and showed the Wife who was amused at my characterization. So 50 rolls later I have several of them!! All identical and all very prominent. Then today I also discovered they all had another die crack running at the bottom of NT in CENT. Thought I'd share it with the peeps here. Enjoy!!

I'm betting that on a coin from this era, those are going to be scarce. Since you have so many, can you see a progression? I know you don't have any full-blown cuds, but I think it would be cool to see that die go from crack to break to terminal.

    .
what a fantastic radial die break, not a crack. obvious field displacement with chipping along the break. on a type coin NOT known for them.

on the current year coinage, i'd call this a homerun discovery.

i remember reading there wouldn't be any substantive ddo/ddr after 1992 because of a change in die making processes. well, most of us know the truth about that one. lol

to see this in '17 just goes to show, errors/varieties are here to stay. :)

    thanks for sharing.

You may have a small fortune there. 2013 machine doubling cents sell for stupid money on eBay. It's a super common die anomaly, just like small die cracks, but for some reason they bid it up, and up....

  • MorganMan94MorganMan94 Posts: 1,330 ✭✭✭✭✭

Very nice! I like it, and it sure doesn't look small or minor to me.
I bet on Ebay you could get a pretty good amount for one of those, I would sell one at a time.

You never know, it just might pay off.
I would never have the patience to go thru new cent rolls. That's a bunch that got passed Quality control, but how many they bang out in an hour is staggering.

Nice radial with significant displacement. Throw a few on the bay and see what happens. Now, can we get a pic of all 115 please

Really cool, your persistence paid off.
I think you could do well on eBay doing one at a time.
I've found a few minor die issues with the shield cents, but nothing as cool as your coins.
    Nice score---thanks for sharing

Regardless of rarity of cause, if you can attach a "hook' for marketing purposes (like the 3 legged Buff.) they could appeal to buyers with the as stated moniker "Lighting bolt cent". Has a dynamic ring to it.

when I find something like a strike through in new obw's they often are scattered here and there in the box. that's something to find 3 on the ends.

Why would you leave them untouched? I can remember a bunch of hype on the State quarter/Golden dollar errors that were hot and cooled off to almost face later on.

I'm leaving the three unopened rolls untouched and in tact. I think they are coolest in the original roll as is. Just my take.

I notice a small difference in the length of the crack inside the Shield. That's about it.

I also found 3 OBW rolls with the errors facing outward. They will remain intact and untouched!!

Do you think all 3 rolls may be full with the error?

Should have never said I found 115 in one box, that means they will be relatively easy to find. Better to have said '5' and let the fever run rampant. Then someone comes up with maybe 3 rolls, sheesh.

I need to go to the bank and see if they have new rolls. Neat find. Last one I remember like this was the speared bison when the Jefferson's were going through changes a few years back.

I believe the speared bison was a die gouge, not a die crack.

word of advice as I have been there ...

Sell these very slowly as in ONE auction per week with fantastic STOCK photos with a 99 cent auction start price and you will do very well.

If it takes you ten years to sell your stash that is awesome as your margins will be insane.

It's not like finding a bunch of 1955 DD's! It's all about the fun and enjoyment of the hunt and the hobby. I wanted to share my experience. I hope others find some also. The die life was limited. Chances of finding another bunch is VERY small considering they make 1 trillion of these each year. Just having good clean fun, which drew me to the hobby years ago.
