If I remember right he said he doubled up on a deal where he took considerable risk. So that Bust dollar was a big win.

A member of a local coin club said he picks up a lot of stuff free on CL. I can't imagine these free listing forums are the right way to go with specialized things like numismatics. Possibly pawn shops tell a bunch of internet savvy kids that they will give them a % of any finds they can sell in their stores.

I have attempted to sell things on Craigslist twice, with adverse enough results I will never do it again:

    1. An old big-screen TV I listed as needing repair at a very cheap price ($50, I think), mainly because I didn't want to have to deal with disposing of it. I got a ton of calls from people who didn't read the listing and assumed it was working ('Non-working, needs repair' was in the title and the description). Finally, someone said they were interested, but right when it was time to arrange for him to pick it up, the guy tried to pop the Western Union scam on me and I told him to pound sand. I ended up putting it at the end of my driveway with a 'Free-Needs Repair-No Returns' sign on it and it disappeared within hours.
    2. We upgraded our washer and dryer and attempted to sell the old dryer (the washer was dead) for $50 (clearly stated in the listing). My wife began getting a string of emails in the middle of the night from someone who was interested. The couple came by to pick the dryer up the next day and acted strangely- we got the idea they were addicts of some kind and were worried we were about to be robbed. We loaded the dryer into the back of their van, and when we asked for the $50 they said "oh, we thought it was free". We pulled it out of their van before they could get in it and they left. We took down their licence plate # and emailed it to a friend with an 'in case anything happens to us' note. Eventually it sold to another couple, who were very nice, but this was the last straw.

I wish cardinal or trade dollar but would post a snap shot of some of their coins and then bait them on Craigslist... would love to see the feeding frenzy that would stir....

I just want to share a few thoughts. You are all assuming that everyone on craigslist has a high knowledge of coins and yet the lowball offers may be from folks who really have no knowledge of the coins or holders. My next thought is that if I was a knowledgeable buyer that seeing these items would be a red flag and that there is some sort of scam from the seller. I.e. The items are stolen, fake, or someone trying to pull afast one. Actually in this case someone was. The poster was playing a game and hence that may have led to. Another set of wacky offers. Anyway once more pricing that there are two sides to a coin. Three of you count the edge.

Coins are pretty old and out of date...
They are locked in the plastic case which I will need to break open in order to spend the coins...
Don't forget about the time and effort I would need to put into make sure the coins are not fake...
Best I can do is $10 for the entire collection ;)

Ask the people who want to rip you off for their contact info and then out them.

I wonder how many of the low ball offers came from coin dealers.

Based on the names, one was a dealer. I know who I am not patronizing now.

It is a shame you cannot convince a local newspaper to pick-up a story of a local coin dealer blatantly trying to screw the public.

thats nuts!!!! You should reply back to the low ballers........"sounds good, lets meet up at my bank" and then no show.

Or as a joke, parrot the language of the Nigerian emails that the coins will be sent by "special courier" for an astronomical fee.

"Will pay $15K for the whole group; if you don't mind the check will be for an extra two K, so you will need to reimburse for the difference. Our check is drawn on a well known (scam) bank and a private courier will be picking up the merchandise." (Expect updates on the numismatic crime site, with descriptions of the shady operators and forum threads running for a while)

Very interesting experiment ... mostly results I would expect. I am meeting someone today (never met before, he posted something on a net site) to review some coins.... should be interesting. I do not expect any problem... he will lose if that is the case. ;) Cheers, RickO

I buy and sell on CL all them time. I do not run into the issues you described. There is always the answer: No.

You can't even give the big ol TVs away. A neighbor had a working on the curb with a free sign that sat there for days. There is a thing on CL where you can list giveaways.

I've seen everything on craigslist as well and enjoyed the good as well as the bad.

I'm sure most of the lowballs were knowledgeable, but others might have been really ignorant buyers or simply thrown in a number to stress a minimum amount they would pay ...

    Interesting experiment!

I've heard that some municipalities have meeting points for Craigslist transactions, usually police-department parking lots. Keeps things safe (or safer, anyway) and well-lit.

Thanks for the reply FTB. I understand you took some risk buying the coins raw, but in cases like that, perhaps it is fairer to both parties to offer a contingency based on whether the coins are genuine and/or grade as expected. Otherwise, it's pretty hard to avoid someone getting ripped off.

Re-reading the other thread it looks like you tried to have him consign them and he refused. Oh well, I guess some people just don't have enough patience or good sense.

Here's the original thread if you want to have fun and calculate what you might have offered, being able to see the same photos that he saw:

I think a few people reported the posting, it was pulled by CL. Oh well. No more offers since.

Throw up another ad in a few days and say "Just bought this from some fool on here. He didn't tell me that the coins are in some kind of plastic box. Even Walgreens won't take it. Best offer gets it."

    Then get your popcorn ready.
