What would you have paid for this?

FadeToBlackFadeToBlack Posts: 7,847 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was recently approached and offered a selection of coins as part of an inheritance. I made an offer based upon the images in the linked album, which was accepted. I'm wondering what you guys would have offered. Yes, these are the original images, I know they're low res.

I'm having trouble with the way the coins are arranged in the photos. I would like to see the coins in hand to determine an offer equitable to each party.

There's no way I'd make an offer based on photos. As was already said, there's no way it could be fair to both parties. You can't even tell if they're genuine. For some of those coins the swing in value between counterfeit and the real deal would be enormous.

If real, like I think they are, there are some whoppers in there. But if cleaned, not as much. Rough. Need to see those in hand, can't even make out the dates.

I'd be nervous they were cleaning them. Looks like the pics were taken in the bathroom. What's up with that?

Obviously some pieces have environmental damage or post mint damage, but between the key date Peace dollars, the Bust dollar, the Seated dollars and the Trade dollars, the seller should have a modest new car down payment in hand.

There are some coins I would not place a bid on or very lowball unless seen in hand - an example is the 1859-O seated dollar, what are those black spot? toning, pitting, environmental damage?

Also there is a question in my mind of authenticity of all coins.

If you bid and got the coins, please update us.

I would probably recommend at least what Mr. Nachbar advertises in his ad; a safe offer for both parties initially then a dividend when the coins are all sold. I have no idea why collectors who originally owned them left no clarity in terms of value and perhaps did not help their kids be properly educated in horse sense. I have seen that more often than not, kids who inherit leave a windfall to the savvy dealers leaving the heirs with less.

The last four pics look to be a roll of 1887 and 1878-s Morgans.
Depending on if you knew the person or not, or had any recourse, it would make a difference on what I would offer.

Obviously, they are not coin collectors, with laying them out on a rubber bath mat to take the photos.
You might have to disinfect them first :)

I would be somewhat worried about the uniform whiteness of some of them. Some look recently cleaned, but I don't claim to have the best eyes. I would ask if s/he cleaned them at all. Even then I might not believe them based on the photos. Looking at the "PL potential" Morgans, the fields look cloudy/hazy similar to a dipped coin that was improperly rinsed. That is the cynic in me thinking and being risk-averse. However, if I got all of the Morgans for cleaned/detail prices plus the rarer pieces at more than a little back of bid, I wouldn't be worried. That is if they're real, which I think they are. Good luck!

PS - was this from Reddit by chance?

At first glance, that was my thinking as well.
Hope not, but from the pics, and not seeing inhand, I would be suspect of more than a coin or two.

Some of those Morgans look killer but the wide multi shots can be hiding their true nature. This is a scratcher lot. Get your coin ready to scratch off that scratcher and hope for 3 "win all prizes"

$3300 would have been my offer (purely hypothetical). Interesting exercise, as I don't know much about dollars.
Buying from photos is not much different from what we do when buying on ebay, except I wonder how you trust these folks to deliver after you pay.

    My retail wild guesses:
$1500 for the 1802; it has smooth fields which suggest VF35 details cleaned (assuming genuine - I'm glad it's easy for you to attribute; if I had to make a real offer I would spend time attributing it myself)
    $1600 = $400 each for 4 seated dollars
    $150 trade dollar
$3000 = $30 each for 91 Morgans and 9 Peace dollars (I can't read many dates, except for apparently several 1921 Peace)
    $450 Lafayette
$30 walker and standing (looks high grade but likely cleaned)
    $6730 total retail guess

Much upside potential, but much risk regarding cleaned coins, so they could do better if it was not on a photo basis.
I look forward to seeing your "unboxing" video.

Interesting opportunity.... however, I would not even make an offer without the coins in hand. I suspect cleaning, damage, counterfeits.... and likely some good coins as well. Without direct examination, no offer. Will be very interesting to see what you find. Cheers, RickO

I never buy anything without either seeing it myself or having someone I trust, who knows more than I do, look at it in hand. Also, it's much easier to buy a coin than to sell it.

Wasn't it Dale Williams who advertised "we fly to buy"? Over a certain number that becomes imperative either one party or the other could get taken to the cleaners.

I'm sure FtB is looking at Express level pricing ATM. Congrats on the rousing success. It was either going to be a slam dunk or a complete FAIL from my point of view. Or maybe I'm just projecting what happens with my reaches.
