Grades and TrueViews just popped on my first submission (8 Gold Coins)

jwittenjwitten Posts: 5,206 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've used NGC mostly in the past, but have been saving a few of my toned raw coins for PCGS to get some trueviews. They are not my highest graded coins, but were set aside for their color. They arrived at PCGS 11/16, and just popped tonight! Any guesses on the grades?

Great group of coins and that 1913 with the purple looks sweet. I'm not too familiar with gold grading, but I'll say the 1913 with the purple got an AU55

The 1908 toning is a lot more purple in hand as well. Here are the pictures I shot of it before grading:

Great coin as well. Which size of gold do you feel is the least difficult to find toned as it seems that toned gold pieces are fairly rare.

I mainly collect smaller ($2 1/2 and under) so mainly find those. I have seen a few larger, but not many. Also, does anyone know why the cert page is not showing the 1851-O as being a double date? I paid for the variety, and it for sure is one.

The 1851-O $2.5 is attractive. The doubled date variety is the most common die pairing my a mile. In fact I cannot recall ever seeing a non-doubled date 1851-O $2.5, only later die states of the same pairing.

    Congratulations!
I think the toning is the best on the 1851$1 and the 2nd 1913...

    1851 $1 - 58
    1851 $3 - 40
    1908 - 58
    1912 - 58
    1913 #1 - 55
    1913 #2 - 58
    1914 - 61
    1915 - 58

Nice toned coins. I'd like to see an article on natural (attractive/unattractive) vs. unnatural gold coin toning.

That's a long wait for a regular submission ( 11/16 to 1/5) even with Trueviews, but the right holders, etc..

I was concerned if they would grade or not. Since toned gold is pretty rare, I thought it would look suspicious having so many graded all at once. Thankfully they all graded!

I don't do gold and Indians are hard from pictures (and IRL).

    I got 2/8 correct.
Or PCGS got 2/8 correct depending on how you look at it. :o

Here is a somewhat related question... how do coins get a plus designation? I've not seen many gold with them, but looking at some of the other recent submissions, it seems some people get 4-5 in a row with a plus.

Many submissions are regrades and many of those have lots of + coins auditioning for the bump up.

  • jwittenjwitten Posts: 5,206 ✭✭✭✭✭

By the way, both the 1908 and 1912 both came from great southern coins on ebay, everyone's favorite coin shop to hate on. Both pretty nice coins!

I've got one such submission in right now.
