Would YOU swap bullion for a really cool coin?

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭

Bear in mind that I am an OLD geezer and could end up with something way less "liquid" than the bullion, BUT..... would have a coin that I (for silly conservative philosophic CAUTIOUS reasoning) would PRUDENTLY (ugh) consider pure silly foolishness.

No, I won't identify the coin in consideration.

Oh yes I will.... ;)

An early bust $10... that I once had one of but swapped it.

And it would decrease my bullion positions by about 6%

Darn it. I think I'm answering my own question.

But I must be crazy.

DARN IT! :#

No brainer if it was me. Bullion sure doesn't bring much satisfaction in hand.

I've done it and never regretted it. There are potential net carrying cost and reporting advantages especially if you own your gold cheap enough.

I think of bullion just like cash. I can sell bullion and go out whenever I want and get more. Can't say the same for a truely rare coin.

You can always buy more gold but when will you get another chance at a rare coin?? I'd do it in a heartbeat!

  • If it's something you want, do it. I've never used bullion for a coin, but I have done it for a car I really wanted. I had less into what I traded, than what the car's asking price was. So I , essentially, paid considerably less for the car. Have never regretted it.

With interest rates rising gold may drop further in price. Now might be a good time to pull trigger. Plus stock market with Trump heading into office might go higher which might help coin market.

Been there, done that. I can/have always buy more bullion, but the uber cool coins I've gotten are now safe in my SDB.

Maybe not as liquid but still have the other 94% or so of the original bullion position for those bullion emergencies whatever they may be.

Yep. A quandary... sorta... I know I can "afford" to do it either cash purchase or swap.

My (OUR when my wife was alive) "plan" was to amass bullion at every chance and then drop it off piecemeal ....AS NEEDED.... in our old age.

Well, ...I... have made it to "old age" but she didn't.

BUT.... the old ..plan.. still nags and while I don't _ expect _to need it before I go to the smelter, it's still a consideration and my "collector" of my younger years is beating up on my "sense" :# of my dotage.

    Still thinking.

However you guys' BIAS is having an effect.

    ;)

Maybe I better hie off to the Precious Metals forum. B)

If you want it, go for it. Bullion is just yellow and white metal. Coins have character and offer something of interest.

Let me help. Using PQueue's response as a template:

What's the goal of the $10, "investment" or "collectible"?

    Your answer - "collectible"

Ask yourself why you own bullion in the first place.

Your answer - "investment, hard asset, etc"

RE: ...way less "liquid" than the bullion...

Your answer - "potential loss if liquidity becomes an issue"

    yes, and ... terrible spreads...

Your answer - "potential loss if resale becomes an issue"

So, assuming that you are more likely to take a potential loss than not, you will recoup at least 1/2 of the 6% if a fire sale becomes necessary.

The coin might be worth 3% of your bullion holdings in terms of enjoyment.

I've collected Large Cents and paid for some of them by selling bullion. At this juncture, I'm contemplating going the other direction but I still enjoy the Large Cents too.

You can go in either direction and it won't ruin you. Bullion could vary by 3% as well, in fact - it has.

Old gold is cool. Bullion is boring.

    Do the swap.

OTOH, I believe bullion prices are near a mid-term bottom. So, would you regret the swap if bullion rises over 20% in the months after Trump takes office?

Well, if you remember your original 'cost basis' in the specific piece(s) of bullion up for trade, and it's low...then use that price in your mind as what you are 'really paying'. Or, if you only have a vague notion of your average all-in-price-per ounce. It's a mind trick, but a worthy one

I once traded an ounce of bullion I bought for a small multiple of melt when prices were relatively low. By the time I traded it gold rose to about 1.3x from where I bought it.

But that particular bullion became 'collectible'. Missed the peak for the type (it was in an SDB while I was overseas), but still managed to use it in a trade where the coin I got cost about 4X what I paid for the original bullion...even though I swapped one ounce for about 1/2 an ounce. My hoard literally shrank by a half ounce, but my numismatic joy increased, coincidentally, 4X.

Eventually I replaced that missing bullion 1/2 ounce at whatever price gold was going for, and didn't give it a second thought. My numismatic mind tricks allowed me to divorce all the activities from each other at that point.

Besides, gold may sink some more before you replace the missing stack ounce(s)...

Certainly! Right now, I have 2 LBS. of Silver (Bullion) waiting for it to climb. Sure I would replace for a coin/s. but in saying that It must be the right coin. Also, It would definitely have to be slabbed by our host. :)

Done it many times but ~$2000 was the max trade. Sounds like you're a holding a good chunk of bullion if 6% of it will get you an early bust $10. I'd certainly do it for the right coin.
