An 1835 Classic Head $5 gold in AU-58

Here is another recent purchase. This coin is housed in an old green label holder. I had to bid MS-60 money to get it.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Hard to justify anteing big money for lower MS when they look like that.

On my first submission to CAC this 38 in AU 55 got a gold sticker and there is not way that I'm now looking to upgrade. Money will go for something else.

I don't see many nice 58's that don't bring strong money. Often they bring 63 money. That's why I quit chasing them years ago. They got too popular as far as I'm concerned.

In the Classic Head series, most of the Mint Stated graded pieces are AUs.

A terrific and somewhat difficult series. I have been getting into gold lately. I bought a raw 35 with color for strong AU+ but it only graded AU-50. On reflection, I'm not sure the color was that great. So, sold it for a loss. But I'm learning.

Yours looks very nice and wholesome.

Who's old enough to remember when these Classic heads were unwanted by dealers?
Hard to get 5-10 bucks over standard Lib design.

    Ah the old days.

  • Nice classic head gold Bill!! I would be happy to have that one in my collection! Looks like it has an attractive deep Gold color to it.

I would put it a little differently - most of the Mint State graded pieces have other problems. When you think of AU coins that are MS graded, what comes to mind are sliders - coins barely worn at high points, cabinet rub, luster rubs, etc., and otherwise nice coins. I don't think that describes most low end MS graded Classic Heads.

What does describe most low end MS CHG coins are excessively hairlined coins, dull and unappealing coins, cleaned and headlight bright coins, off-color coins, etc. They haven't circulated like AU coins, but MS grade 60-62 most times doesn't make them a better coin.

I've seen alot of the nicest CHGs over the years and my view is the TPGs aren't shy about keeping the really nice sliders out of 63 holders and sticking them into 58s. That is why, to me, stman's observation holds true.
