    Both look good to me.
    I love them Barber Halves.....

The Lincoln looks good to me. The Mercury is questionable; I don't like the looks of the area around the mm. Both need reputable slabs to realize their values.

Not sure about the cent. Dime looks good. How about a close up of

    the VDB.
  • Authenticating coins from a digital photograph is a crapshoot, as you can see. Everybody with no stake in the game has an opinion. That's not enough. So here is what you need to consider.

For evaluation purposes only, any semi key or key coins should be evaluated by a reputable agency and encapsulated for protection. The value becomes a measurable quantity then and only then. Everyone has an opinion, some far more reputable than others, but until a company, such as PCGS or NGC, concurs the coins are authenticate, the value will be limited and I believe the op is trying to evaluate these coins.

As other s said, from photo's are a little tougher because you cant see everything, but I believe they are both ok

As best as can be judged from the pictures, I would say both are authentic. Next step, send them to our hosts ... Well worth the investment. Cheers, RickO

Good advice. I would suggest the PCGS links I gave earlier be used as a method to decide whether or not to submit a raw coin of either date, that's all.

If it looks like the photos, you'll likely be way ahead (financially) with the cost. I say "likely" because authentication requires inspection in hand. If it doesn't look like the photos, I wouldn't bother.

I like the photos, but every edge of every coin needs a look-see. And a two dimensional photo, instead of 3-D vision, attached to a brain? With more than one expert involved, you get a lot more for the money than the encapsulation.

But my album coins stay in the Dansco. image

Both look real to me. Max dollars will be achieved via TPG's.

Both look fine, though sending them in for grading is highly advised.

I think both are OK but also would like to see VDB.

The dime is one of the four known mint marks. it looks fine to me.

  • Thank you all for your replies. I was fairly sure of the cent but not the dime. The mintmark on the dime has a filled in center and that threw me off. My purpose in asking you for help was to determine if they are worth submitting to PCGS for authentication or if they are obvious fakes.

100% worth the expense of submitting. Let us know how this pans out.

The cent, as best, will get into a genuine holder, as it appears to be harshly cleaned. Before spending money for authentication, I'd first look at the diagnostics per the link above. If you think they may make the cut, I'd then take them to a major show and have someone who specializes in each series look at the coins. Check on the credentials of the people whom you ask before actually asking them. If you get a thumbs up at the show, then, and only then, would I send them in.

Good results and I agree with the straight grades. I think the idea the cent was cleaned was more due to reflectivity of the high contrast photo. With straight grades from pcgs, you'll see more for your coins than if left raw. If looking to sell, I'd just place on eBay and let them fetch what they'll fetch.

Your next task, if doing the above, is to take clear and attractive photos. Noting from one opinion above, you don't want to give the impression of a cleaned surface if that's not the case. :)

I told her I was concerned that the dime wouldn't grade so it was a relief to get a VG08.

You did great. On another day at the TPG you could have received a Good 6 on the dime and VF on the cent. Grades optimized. Nothing else to do but enjoy them.

Yup, make room in the certified counts for one more of each.
