Is this a real high price for a 1916 PR67+ CAC Proof Buffalo 5c?

I had some bids on HA tonight and was watching while waiting for my coins to come up.

The Price Guide is $9250 and this sold for $15k ($17.625 with BP)
That's almost twice the Price Guide image

To me twice the catalog, when the catalog is in-line with recent auction results is "moon money." They must of been buying the toning. This is probably the result of two or more guys really going bananas for the same coin. Been there, done that, and don't want to do that again, although I really like the coin I bought for "moon money."

Those other 8 might not actually be "better", all things considered.

I don't normally bid or watch these high-end auctions much. But I did watch the live bidding for a while last night (via internet).

This one seemed to go for a VERY strong price:

    1920-S Walking Liberty 50c, $42,300

Old time collection one time through. The next time you see that coin it will be in a PCGS66 holder and the price will seem like a bargain.

It sure looks like a 66.

If it is a Matte Proof 66, which I suspect it is given the minor spotting, Coin Facts says it's worth $5,250 and recent auction results have been under $4,000. If the $17,000+ buy price is going to seem like a bargain, the coin is going need a hell of a push from somewhere.

Yep, the spots are a deal killer for me.

Okay, the buyer paid 2X the going rate for a pretty and rare coin. What's he going to do with it now? It's not an uber rarity that everyone would love to own. I think back when someone did this for the finest known MS 66 full bell 53 S Franklin. We all know how that turned out.

He was referring to the 20-S WLH that Dan Carr posted, not the nickel in the OP.

Wow, I just can't see that Walker obverse as a 66 - look at all that action straight up the thigh and on the breastplate! Whoever can cross that at 66, please send in my coins on their next submission please.

If drug cartels started laundering money through the rare coin market, you would start seeing some ridiculous prices. Like they did to the quarter horse market.
