Have any of your Numismatic chickens come home to roost??

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
A few of mine have, but it was years ago when I thought I was smart enough to make the ACG mistake. After making payment due, I stuck to safer things.

What about you, have any "chickens" shown up??

Here's one that did not come home, unfortunately.

I have no idea what this thread is supposed to mean given the dearth of details, and use of acronyms in the OP.

Very nice pieces Andy! Love them both! The family of chickens is neat as is the one with the crown.

I've thought about medals that have a chicken (rooster) coming home to roost on Liberty's (Marianne's) head but haven't gotten around to picking one up yet.

the "dearth" of details is self-explanatory if you understand the saying and the acronym of ACG is Accugrade, a grading service that any veteran would understand.

    does that help??

Not sure as my chickens are too busy for your thread image

Why not just spell out Accugrade then to begin with -- instead of saving 6 characters and causing confusion? Accugrade has been a "nothing" in the slabbing world for nearly 30 years, so one could be a "veteran" of 20 years and still not have a clue what you're referring to.

I understood the idiom perfectly clearly, but I didn't know that ACG was an accepted abbreviation for Accugrade, and thus my confusion. Nonetheless, others clearly didn't get your thread meaning either, as no one as of yet has posted anything about said idiomatic "chickens coming home to roost"...

Bought a PF70 ACG for a great price years ago. Never bought another from that company.

Honestly, I always thought a better business model would be to grade all the coins under instead of over.

It may hurt sales at first because collectors may be bummed with the lower grade, but in the long run, who knows .....

  • Wabbit2313Wabbit2313 Posts: 7,268 ✭✭✭✭✭

I know exactly what ACG is and I own many slabs. I did not buy them thinking they were PCGS, ever. As a matter of fact, I am way ahead of that game buying a proof Morgan in one of their slabs, which graded just fine.

That chicken is still homeless for me!

I thought that you were a pescaterian.

I ate what was probably a whole octopus for lunch yesterday at the San Miguel mercado. I wonder if that is compliant with a pescaterian diet.

I'm generally a hoarder, but try to control it.
At one point, I was going to start buying Cheerios Dollars, back before it was known that a variety was in there.

I talked myself out of it. Figured it was silly. Boy that was a good decision.

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

Years ago, I had the "distinction" of owning a MS65 ACG graded 1921 Peace $. That was before I realized what ACG stood for (Awful Coin Grading) By now I suspect, the slabs are worth more than the graded coins inside them.

Same thing, as far as chickens are concerned. image

I have eaten octopus in the last year...

I had a couple inch piece of quasi live snake in Korea. The rest was alive, still pinned to a tree with a bayonet. It was some sort of honor to have the 1st piece. I could feel it twitching inside me for about 10 minutes. Either eat it or cause an incident with the locals.

It did not taste like chicken.

I understand the idiom and I know what Accugrade is (was), but I still have no idea whatsoever about the subject of this thread.

I can surely attest however, that my chickens, do in fact, come home just before dark to roost.

So there's a good chance you've eaten Chicken as it's one of the most popular baits used for Octopus image

I would think chickens would flock to a vegetarian as a safe harbor.

I am also confused by this topic. So you did something bad with a coin, and then later that bad thing cost you in some way? Or is it about coins with actual chickens on them. i am admittedly a noob but this one is a head scratcherimage.

I don't think I have any coins with chickens on them, but several with kittens. They come from the Isle of Man.

This is a Morbiducci Prova (pattern) struck in 1927 for the design competition which Percy Metcalfe ultimately won with a design which became the series which began in 1928. Morbiducci had several pieces struck in most denominations and while his designs were superior, the committee chaired by WB Yeats deemed them to be "too Italian".

These pieces are very rare with the penny and the half crown the rarest with 3-5 extant. The above came to auction in Geneve this year as a PF45. Farouk had a set.

Here is my favorite design of that series depicting a horse which incidentally is also not compliant with RYK's diet:

Great design for the Half Crown- Its really hard to understand why it was not selected... possibly due to the simplicity of others that were selected...

I think if you consider the fact this in 1927 the country was preparing for it's first national coinage and the committee was tasked with depicting animals indigenous to Ireland, tapping into a source of national pride.

Now reflecting on Morbiducci's designs, they are much more grand and emotional than Percy Metcalfe's stoic and simple design. Metcalfe, an Englishman, was unanimously chosen by the committee.

Here are the other designs which come in a variety of different metal compositions, all rare with the max being maybe 8 - 10 pieces in any metal with the rarest being 1 or 2:

Absolutely gorgeous. I have always liked the designs they eventually went with. But these are so superior.
